SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Minnesota State softball (37-15, 17-9 NSIC) lost both of its games against the Vikings of Augustana (42-13, 27-1 NSIC) on Thursday. Augustana shut out the Mavericks in game one, winning 3-0. Minnesota State almost came back in game two, with
Cheyenne Behrends and
Maddie Helin both hitting home runs, but it wasn't enough to push MSU over Augustana. The Vikings have now won 24-straight games. The Mavericks, with the two losses, are now tied for fifth place in the NSIC.
Game 1 at Augustana: Augustana 3, Minnesota State 0

The Vikings scored in two runs in the bottom of the first inning. A fielding error and a sacrifice bunt put a runner on second. Kennedy Buckman hit a home run over the fence in left field to put Augustana up 2-0.
Kylie Sullivan doubled in the top of the fourth, but the Vikings turned a double play to end the inning.
The home team scored another run in the fourth inning, thanks to an RBI single from Nicole Bellis after a double from Gracey Brink. Augustana led 3-0.
The game ended on a strikeout. The Mavericks' only hit was the Sullivan double in the fourth.
Senior
Kacy Nickerson came in for some relief work after the home run in the first inning. She pitched three innings, giving up the run in the fourth inning and striking out two batters as well.
Game 2 at Augustana: Augustana 4, Minnesota State 3
W: Lander (13-5) L: Armbruster (19-6)
Augustana struck first again in the bottom of the first. Asthon Dorman hit a two-RBI single with the bases loaded to put the Vikings up 2-0.
The Vikings would score in the second inning as well, thanks to another RBI single, this time from Desi Cuevas. Augustana led 3-0.
Brink hit a solo shot in the third inning to put the Vikings up by four.
Junior third baseman
Cheyenne Behrends hit a solo home run of her own in the top of the fifth inning. It was her fourth home run of the season and 25
th RBI.
Freshman
Rhyan Fritz hit a leadoff double in the top of the seventh. Her teammate and fellow freshman
Maddie Helin blasted her fourth homer of the season over the fence in right center, making it a one-run game.
Marina Carter drew a four-pitch walk to put the tying run on. A hit by pitch and another walk loaded the bases. The game ended on a groundout, giving the Vikings the second win of the day.
Behrends ended the day with two hits. Helin had multiple RBI for the fourth time this season.
"Two hard fought games today," said Mavericks head coach
Lori Meyer. "We fought until the very end in game two. The home runs got us back into the game, but our relief pitching held them scoreless in the last three innings, which was important. Now, we need to ride this momentum into Saturday's games."
Minnesota State softball concludes its regular season on Saturday, on the road against Southwest Minnesota State (19-30, 10-16 NSIC). The Mavericks and the Mustangs will play at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.
