WINTERHAVEN, Fla. --- Minnesota State went 1-1 on Monday as it bested Ashland 3-2 in eight innings, before falling to Grand Valley State 3-0.
MSU now owns a 16-4 record on the season.
Game 1 Recap
The Mavericks began the day with a 3-2 win over Ashland
Freshman
Maddie Oetzmann (7-1) earned the win as she allowed two runs, one earned, in 7.2 innings. Oetzmann allowed just one hit in the eighth inning, while striking out four batters. Junior
Sophia Del Vecchio earned her first save of the season as she got the final out of the game. Delaney Lis (1-3) took the loss as she allowed three runs, two earned, on two hits in four innings.
Oetzmann left five runners on base through the first seven innings as she did not allow a hit. Her counterparts, Bryn Grabowski and Lis also kept the Mavericks in check through seven innings as they combined to strand six runners on base while giving up just three hits.
With the international tie breaker rule in place in the eighth, junior
Marin Carter started the inning on second base. Senior
Kylie Sullivan then walked, before both runners moved up a base via a sac bunt from senior
Ellie Tallman. Sophomore
Gianna Lara then blasted her fourth home run of the season to left field to put MSU up 3-0.
In the bottom of the eighth Lily Rockwell was placed on second base to start the inning. A walk and a wild pitch put runners on the corner, before a ground out left runners on second and third. Oetzmann managed to get the second out but Hailey Krinn then drove in both runners with a single to right field to cut MSU's lead to 3-2. Del Vecchio then came in and forced a ground out to end the game 3-2 in favor of the Mavericks.
Lara finished the game with two hits and three RBI.
"
Gianna Lara came up big for us in the top of the eighth with her three-run home run," head coach
Lori Meyer said. "
Sophia Del Vecchio came in the bottom of the inning and got the final out for us. Great to pull out that win in extra innings."
Game 2 Recap
Minnesota State finished the day with a 3-0 loss to Grand Valley State.
Senior
McKayla Armbruster (7-3) took the loss as she allowed three runs on seven hits in five innings while striking out three. Del Vecchio allowed just one hit in two innings of relief. Nevaeh Ingram (2-0) earned the win as she gave up just four hits in seven innings, while striking out five.
After three scoreless innings, the Lakers scored the first run of the game in the top of the fourth. Morgan Spicer led off the fourth with a single and was driven in with an RBI-double from Kelsey Komorous. Later in the top of the fifth, GVSU loaded the bases with one out. Spicer then drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to center field, before Komorous drove in another with a single up the middle to put the Lakers up 3-0.
Freshman
Rhyan Fritz and freshman
Courtney Kessler recorded doubles in the fifth and the seventh innings, respectively, but the Mavericks were not able to bring them around to score as Ingram closed out the game with a 3-0 shutout.
"GVSU is a good team, very athletic and their pitcher Ingram threw a great game," Meyer said. "In the fourth they put two hits back-to-back and then added two insurance runs in the fifth inning. Offensively we just couldn't get anything going in the game."
Minnesota State continues its season on Tuesday as it takes on Edinboro at 8:00 a.m. (CST) and Clarion at 10:15 a.m. in Winterhaven, Fla.
