Mavericks Lock Down Mustangs in Taylor Center

Mankato, Minn. – Minnesota State kept Southwest Minnesota State reigned in during tonight's dual, keeping their NSIC dual win streak alive with a 30-15 win at Taylor Center.
 
SMSU was the first on the board with a tech fall win at 125 pounds, putting the team score at 5-0 SMSU.
 
Freshman Andrew Weiss, at 133 pounds, kicked off the Maverick effort with a fall in the second period at 3:09 against SMSU's Chase Anderson. Weiss scored a takedown and 2-point nearfall in the first, followed by another takedown in the third before catching Anderson for a pin. Trayton Anderson, 141-pound junior, also won by fall in the second period. After dominating the first period with a takedown and two 4-point nearfalls, Anderson chose top to start the second period, getting Hunter Pfantz, of SMSU, on his back at 3:09.
 
SMSU gained their next two wins at 149 pounds and 157 pounds.
 
At 165 pounds, sophomore Kole Marko, won by major decision over Ashton LaBelle (SMSU). Marko went into the third period ahead 3-1 and clinched the win with three takedowns over a one-minute span, finishing 13-4.
 
Junior Drake Hayward kept the Mavericks' momentum going with a win by fall at 2:01 against SMSU's Lucas Hodges, putting the team score at 21-11 MSU. Another win by fall in the first period followed, with MSU's Gavin Christoffersen (184-lb.) beating SMSU's Elijah Sterner at 1:08.
 
Getting the Mustangs final win for the night was senior No. 3 Caden Steffen at 197 pounds.
 
In the last match of the night, MSU redshirt-freshman Tanner Gaffey posted a massive upset win at285 pounds against SMSU's No. 10 Jacob Dykes. Gaffey tied the match 2-2 at 5:28 in the third period with an escape and found a takedown in the last few seconds to win by a 5-2 decision.
 
With the victory, the Mavericks improve to 2-3 NSIC duals, 5-3 overall. Minnesota State travels down to Upper Iowa on Sunday, Feb. 4th, with the dual starting at 2:00 p.m.
