MANKATO, Minn. – Minnesota State traveled to Storm Lake, Iowa to compete at the BVU Open, ending with three Mavericks placing in the top six.
 
Redshirt freshman transfer Paolo Salminen, 157-lb., was the sole Maverick to make it to the Championship Round. Salminen moved through the first round and quarterfinals with ease, winning by fall each time. Salminen had a close 2-1 decision win in the semifinal to continue to the championship match. With a 3-1 record for the day, Salminen finished in second after a 16-6 major decision loss to Kane Naaktgeboren (Iowa State University).
 
Sophomores Andrew Weiss and Cody Kwak also placed at the open, finishing in fifth and sixth, respectively. Weiss, 141-lb., won by fall in the third consolation round to make it into the fifth place match, then placed fifth with a win by fall at 4:04 over Tanner Arjes (Upper Iowa). Kwak, 285-lb., had three wins by fall to make it to the fifth place match, and placed sixth after a 5-3 decision loss against Xavier Bruening (Iowa State University).
 
The Mavericks continue competition this weekend, hosting their first home dual of the season against Upper Iowa. The dual will start at 5 p.m. in the Taylor Center tomorrow, Sunday, Dec. 8^th, 2024.
