MANKATO, Minn. – The Minnesota State Mavericks (16-1-6, 11-0-3 NSIC) secured a hard-fought 1-0 win over No. 3 seed Missouri Western in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday afternoon at The Pitch.
The game showcased strong performances from both teams on offense and defense in the first half, with the Mavericks recording eight shots on goal while the Griffons managed three. Despite these efforts, the score remained locked at 0-0 going into halftime.
The decisive moment came in the 66th minute when
Amara Smith was fouled in the penalty box by Missouri Western, leading to a critical penalty kick for Minnesota State.
Maille Mathis stepped up to the spot and delivered, scoring the game's lone goal to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead.
From there, the Mavericks' defense held firm, preventing Missouri Western from finding the equalizer and sealing the victory.
With this win, Minnesota State advances to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Their next opponent will be determined by the outcome of the match between Central Oklahoma and Central Missouri. If Central Oklahoma wins, the Mavericks will host the game at The Pitch on Sunday, December 1. If Central Missouri prevails, Minnesota State will travel to Central Missouri for the match.
