MANKATO, Minn. – Freshmen
Jacob Fitzpatrick, 125-lb. from La Crescent, Minn., and
Colton Hush, 141-lb. from Woodville, Wis., placed first in the freshman bracket at the Auggie Invite, hosted by Augsburg University in Minneapolis, Minn.
Fitzpatrick received a bye in the first round of competition. In the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, Fitzpatrick won by fall at 4:05 and 4:32, respectively. In the championship match, Fitzpatrick won by a close 5-4 decision over Dominick Marre (Central).
Hush, bringing his record to 9-1 for the season, began the day with a bye, followed quickly with a win by fall at 4:45 and a major decision (16-4) win in the semifinals to land in the championship match. Hush faced James Lovelady (Upper Iowa), winning by an 18-8 MD.
Also making his way to the championship round and placing second in the freshman bracket was freshman
Derrick Steinke, a 197-lb. from Hastings, Minn. Steinke won by fall at 2:52 in the semifinal, and was defeated by Ethan Winkelman (Augsburg) in the finals.
Placing fourth at the Auggie Invite were freshman
Jesus Gonzalez (285-lb.) in the freshman bracket and senior
Isaiah Mlsna (149-lb.), in the gold bracket. Redshirt-sophomore
Chase Beckett also placed at the Invite, receiving fifth in the consolation bracket at the 133-lb. weight class. Tying for sixth in the gold bracket at 141-lb. were junior
Elijah Reece and freshman
Brayden Sonnentag in a no contest match.
The Mavericks also had a squad travel to the Grand View Open in Des Moines, Iowa. Sophomore
Evan Farley (184-lb.) placed fourth, followed by sophomore
Grant Cook (184-lb.) placing fifth, both wrestling in the freshman/sophomore bracket.
Walker Bents, the 149-lb. sophomore, placed fifth in the open bracket.
The Mavericks now wait until December to continue competition, hosting the first dual of the season against Upper Iowa on December 8
th at 5:00p.m. in the Taylor Center, Mankato, Minn.
