WAYNE, Neb. – No. 9 ranked Minnesota State soccer played to a 0-0 draw at Wayne State College Sunday afternoon at breezy WSC Soccer Field. The Mavericks extended their unbeaten streak to 11 straight games and have not allowed an opponent goal in 315 minutes of continuous play.
MSU goalkeeper Claire Longueville made three saves for her seventh career clean sheet. Sidney Truman stopped six shots in net for the Wildcats.
"I felt it was a solid effort by Clare in goal," said head coach
Brian Bahl. "She has been consistent for us and I think she made probably a few more saves than she even got credit for."
Minnesota State led in shot attempts 17-10 and corner kicks 7-1 in the tie.
At the 20-minute mark, Paige Pemberton took a free kick just outside the top of the box but her attempt was blocked by the Mavericks. Earning five first-half corners compared to WSC's one, the Mavericks also posted a pair of shots on goal while holding the Warriors off the board.
Addison Clarey marked the Mavericks' first shot on goal of the second half. Clarey cut to the middle in the 56
th minute and lofted one that was swallowed by Truman.
Avery Korsching snuck inside the box and fired a shot just wide of the right post five minutes later, resulting in an MSU corner opportunity.
Longueville stopped a long try from Maia Vacks in the 79
th minute. Then inside of 10 minutes to play in regulation,
Marin Johnson took away the ball from a defender and tried a shot to the lower left corner, saved by Truman.
"Overall, I didn't think the effort was at our standard that we set," said head coach
Brian Bahl. "Conditions were difficult for both teams and it's tough to win on the road in this league but we needed more urgency and energy. We forced a lot of things instead of taking the open spaces and exploiting our opponent's weaknesses."
Minnesota State (9-1-4, 8-0-2 NSIC) remained in first place in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, ahead of Augustana (6-2-1) and Bemidji State (6-2-0). The Mavericks play four more NSIC opponents prior to the NSIC Tournament first round, set for November 11.
Minnesota State Moorhead visits Mankato on Friday, October 25 for a 3 p.m. start at The Pitch on Family Weekend. Wayne State College (4-5-4, 3-3-3 NSIC) is in ninth place in the standings and hosts Bemidji State next.
