Mavericks Tie Vikings, Augustana Wins Shootout

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Minnesota State rallied in the third period to tie Augustana 3-3 but fell in a shootout Friday night at Sanford Premier Center in the inaugural meeting between the two foes.

Connor Gregga scored his first goal of the season and Brett Moravec notched a power play tally in the third but the Vikings capitalized on early opportunities to overcome a 47-23 MSU advantage in shots on goal.

Zack Rose made 44 saves and added two more in the shootout to help secure the tie for Augustana. The teams conclude the non-conference series Saturday at 6:07 p.m. CT.

"I felt our team got better throughout the game," said Maverick head coach Luke Strand. "The shot margin and scoring chance margin didn't add up to what we wanted to see on the scoreboard. Augustana played a strong game, led by a great outing in goal."

Shay Donovan started the scoring 11:23 into the first period with a shot from the right point that found its way through traffic. Then a line change enabled Hayden Hennen to score on a 2-on-0 at 16:52 for a 2-0 Viking advantage.

The Mavericks struck back in the second period when Sam Morton snapped his CCHA leading 14th goal of the season to cut the deficit in half.

Augustana cashed in on its first power play opportunity when Ryan Naumovski scored his fifth marker with assists by Brett Meerman and Colton Friesen.

In the third, a reverse hit by Owen Bohm in the Maverick zone resulted in a major penalty for contact to the head after a lengthy review by the officials. Brett Moravec posted his second goal of the season during the power play with Evan Murr and Sam Morton assisting.

The Mavericks tied the game 3-3 at 8:52 by crashing the net. Connor Gregga tapped in the rebound with Jakob Stender and Will Hillman given credit with assists.

Overtime was highlighted by scoring chances in both directions and Alex Tracy made a pad save on a breakaway chance to keep it even.

Minnesota State (8-8-3, 5-4-1 CCHA) finished 1-3 on the power play while Augustana (6-10-2) converted 1-2. The Mavericks won 34-62 faceoffs (54.8-percent) in their first game action f since December 16 at RPI.
