Minnesota State Drops First NSIC Dual to Minot State

Mankato, Minn. – Minnesota State hosted Minot State to start the conference dual season, finishing with a 22-14 loss tonight at Taylor Center.
 
Starting the dual at 125 pounds, freshman Lucas Ryan had Logen Fischer, of Minot State, tied at 8-8 at the end of the second period. Fischer had a late reversal in the third to take the lead and would end up on top, winning 10-9. MSU also started freshman Andrew Weiss at 133 pounds, losing by a 10-0 major decision.
 
Up next, junior transfer Trayton Anderson put the Mavericks on the board with a close 2-0 decision win, collecting an escape in the third period and riding time at the end of the match. Sophomore Isaiah Mlsna kept the momentum going with four takedowns and a four-point nearfall to beat Minot State's Isaac Ortega by a 18-2 tech fall at 5:38. This put MSU ahead in the team race 8-7.
 
At 157 pounds, sophomore Caleb Meunier was first to score in the first period and led at the end of the second, however would finish the match with a 9-5 decision loss. Kole Marko, a 165-lb. sophomore, had a tough decision loss in overtime to the Beavers' Brendan Barnes.
 
Putting the Mavericks back on track was Drake Hayward at 174 pounds. With two takedowns in the first period, adding another in the second, and securing riding time, Hayward won by 10-4 decision, closing the team score to 13-11 Minot. Gavin Christoffersen was up next at 184 pounds. After scoreless first and second periods, Christoffersen got an escape and takedown to secure the 5-0 decision victory.
 
In the last two matches of the dual, Shane Gibson, 197-lb. junior, lost to Cannon Potts, of Minot State, by fall at 1:34. Freshman Tanner Gaffey, at 285 pounds, held #6 Jake Swirple to a minimum, receiving a 5-1 decision lost, and giving Minot State the dual victory.
 
Minnesota State hosts UMary tomorrow night at 7 p.m. in the Taylor Center.
