Mankato, Minn. --- No. 8 Minnesota State (2-1-1) dropped its second match of the weekend to Grand Valley State (2-1-1) by a 1-0 final.
The match was held scoreless till the 73rd minute when Minnesota State was called for a handball in the box off a GVSU corner kick. Defender
Kacy Lauer buried the Lakers' opportunity which was all Grand Valley needed to secure the win. It was Lauer's second of the season and first penalty kick goal of her career.
GVSU out-shot the Mavericks 22-14 with shots-on-goal registering at 8-4 in favor of the Lakers.
Head coach
Brian Bahl after the game: "Hate this result for our ladies. They competed so hard, with so much heart today, and executed what we wanted so well. To have it come down to a PK is really tough and super unfortunate.
We created a lot of quality chances and did a great job of limiting the quality looks they got. We were good enough to get the win, just didn't go our way.
I'm really excited about how we're playing and where we're at this early in the season."
The Mavericks are back in action on Friday as they travel to Augustana to play the Vikings at 4:00 p.m.
