SIOUX FALLS, S.D. --- Minnesota State suffered a pair of losses Sunday afternoon as the Augustana defeated the Mavericks 3-1 in game one and 2-0 in game two.
With the losses, MSU drops to 13-11, including a 2-4 NSIC record. With the wins, AU improves to 17-8, including a 4-0 conference record.
Game 1 Recap
Minnesota State began the day with a 3-1 loss in game one.
Junior
McKayla Armbruster (8-6) took the loss as she gave up three runs, while striking out six in the complete game effort. Hailey Houston (8-2) earned the win as she gave up just one run on six hits in seven innings.
The game remained scoreless through the first three innings as the Mavericks and Vikings combined for a total of three hits.
The scoreless tie came to an end on the bottom of the fourth as Delanie Young notched a two-run home run down the left field line to put the Vikings up 2-0. The Mavericks answered right back in the top of the fifth as freshman
Gianna Lara blasted a solo home run to left center to cut AU's lead to 2-1.
AU added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as Torri Chute recorded a solo home run to left field to put the Vikings up 3-1. MSU then went down in order in the top of the seventh as Augustana secured the 3-1 win.
Lara recorded two of MSU's six hits in the game.
Game 2 Recap
Minnesota State finished the day with a 2-0 loss to the Vikings.
AU's Lexi Lander (7-5) threw a perfect game as she set down all 21 batters she faced while striking out five. Sophomore
Sophia Del Vecchio (4-3) took the loss as she gave up two runs on four hits in 0.1 innings. Sophomore
Kacy Nickerson threw 5.2 shutout innings in relief as she allowed just four hits while striking out four.
AU's two runs of the game came during the first inning as the Vikings recorded four hits in the opening frame. Chute drove in the first run of the game with a single to center field, before Young posted an RBI-single through the left side to put the Vikings up 2-0. Nickerson then came in for Del Vecchio and got the final two outs to end the threat.
Nickerson would not allow an Augie runner to advance past second base the rest of the way, while Lander kept the Mavericks off the bases as AU secured the 2-0 win.
Minnesota State begins an eight-game homestand on Wednesday as the Mavericks host Southwest Minnesota State at the Maverick All-Sports Dome. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.
