EMPORIA, Kan. --- Minnesota State picked up two more wins Sunday afternoon as it defeated Newman 8-1 and Emporia State 5-0 in Emporia, Kan.
MSU owns a 6-2 record on the season.
Game 1 Recap
Minnesota State began the day with an 8-1 win over the Newman Jets.
Sophomore
Sophia Del Vecchio (1-0) picked up the win as she allowed one unearned run and five hits in four innings. Junior
McKayla Armbruster earned the save as she set down all nine batters she faced, including four strikeouts. Madison Dewitt (1-1) was saddled with the loss as she gave up eight runs, seven earned, on 10 hits in six innings.
The Mavericks got the first run of the game in the bottom of the second. Junior
Kylie Sullivan led off the inning with a single, before a sac bunt and a couple of Newman errors brought her around to score. MSU added another run in the bottom of the third to go up 2-0. Junior
Madi Newman led off the inning with a double, before a wild pitch and an error allowed her to score.
With one out in the bottom of the fourth, senior
Sydney Nielsen walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Freshman
Ava Smithson then drove in Nielsen with an RBI-double to put the Mavericks up 3-0 after four innings.
After exchanging runs in the fifth, MSU notched four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up 8-1. Smithson led off the inning with a solo home run to center field, before a triple from Newman drove in freshman
Tuscany Ballot. Nielsen capped off the inning with a two run home run down the left field line.
Nielsen and Smithson both drove in two runs, while Newman and Nielsen each scored two runs. Smithson led the team in hits with three, while Newman, Nielsen and Sullivan each recorded two.
Game 2 Recap
The Mavericks finished the day with a 5-0 win over Emporia State.
Armbruster (5-0) picked up the win as she threw a four-hit shutout, while striking out seven batters. Jayda VanAckeren (1-1) took the loss as she allowed five runs, on six hits, in 1.1 innings pitched. Gracie Rabe threw 5.2 innings in relief of VanAckeren and gave up four hits, while striking out six.
The Mavericks struck first in the top of the first to go up 2-0. Nielsen reached on a one-out single, before sophomore
Cheyenne Behrends blasted a home run to left field.
MSU added three more runs in the top of the second to increase its lead to 5-0. Freshman
Gianna Lara and sophomore
Marina Carter each recorded RBI-doubles, while Nielsen drove in the other with an RBI-single.
Nielsen finished the game with three hits, while Tallman and Carter each posted two hits. Behrends drove in two runs also.
Minnesota State returns to action on March 3 as it travels to Clermont, Fla., to take part in the Spring Games. MSU begins the trip with games against Assumption (10:30 a.m. CST) and Dominican University, N.Y. (1:00 p.m. CST).
