#19 Minnesota State Hits the Road to Tango with #1 Grand Valley State

#19 Minnesota State looks to take down top ranked Grand Valley State this Sunday at GVSU.

MANKATO, Minn. ---#19 Minnesota State looks to take down top ranked Grand Valley State this Sunday at GVSU. Last weekend, the Mavericks opened its season with a win agianst Missouri Southern 3-1 on Aug. 26th, however, trying to bounce back after a tough 1-0 loss against Central Oklahoma on Sunday. Minnesota State will square off with the Lakers at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday at GVSU Field.

Facing GVSU: The Mavericks own two wins against the Lakers out of its pervious 11 matchups. MSU last played GVSU in the 2019 NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Quarterfinals losing to a score to 5-2. During the match, Brynn Desens sent two corner kicks into the box resulting in two Maverick goals for her 15th and 16th assists on the season. Those assists broke the Mavericks single season record for assists in a season, which was originally held by Emily Moris (2014) who had 14.

Scouting the Lakers: GVSU has started its season with a 2-0 record over the weekend with two wins against Missouri S&T and Maryville over the weekend. In 2021, the Lakers finished with a 12-1-2 overall and 12-0-2 GLIAC record that was good enough for the top spot in the conference. Grand Valley State is heading into 2022 as the NCAA Division II women's soccer defending champions after a phenomenal 2021 season. GVSU is led by senior forward, Kennedy Bearden who had a stellar 2021 season finishing with 41 points. In goal, sophomore Kendall Robertson is looking to build off an impressive freshman season. Robertson made 15 starts last season racking up 1,474 minutes and has started 2-0 in 2022. Robertson owned an .818 save percentage and a 0.37 goals-against average for a 13-1-1 record in 2021.
