Maryville, Mo. --- The Minnesota State softball team (6-3, 0-0 NSIC) was back in action on Monday as they had rematches against Central Missouri (1-7, 0-0 MIAA) and Northwest Missouri State (2-10, 0-0 MIAA). In game one, the Mavericks avenged their loss yesterday and defeated the Jennies 4-0. In a shortened game two due to darkness, the Mavericks gave up three runs through the third and fourth and fell to the Bearcats 3-2.
Game 1
Mackenzie Ward got the start in the circle for the Mavericks and pitched a complete game. In seven innings, Ward racked up 10 strikeouts, allowed just two hits and walked two in the shut out. Ward improves to 3-2 on the young season.
Central Missouri's Kaylee Diggs (0-1) took the loss after giving up six hits, five walks and four runs all of which were earned in 6.2 innings. She also walked five Mavericks.
Senior Hailey Forshee had two hits in the game in four at bats with three RBI's. Forshee had a two RBI single in the seventh to push the score to 4-0. Freshman Cheyenne Behrends also had two hits as she went two for four at the plate.
The Jennies Abbey Fisher and Halle Howes got the only two hits on the day for the Jennies with no RBI's.
Game 2
McKayla Armbruster (0-1) started in the circle for the Mavericks in game two. Armbruster pitched four innings, giving up seven hits and three runs. Two of which were earned. Ward pitched one inning in relief giving up no hits, no walks and had no strikeouts.
Breck Dickey (2-4) got the start and the win this evening for the Bearcats. Dickey pitched four innings, giving up five hits, two walks and earning eight strikeouts. Breck gave up one run which was earned. Christina Campbell pitched two innings in relief giving up four hits and racking up three strikeouts. Campbell gave up one run which was earned.
Madi Newman and Hailey Forshee both had two hits in the game and one RBI each. Forshee started the scoring off in the first with an RBI single bringing home Torey Richards. Then, in the top of the fourth Newman singled down the right field line bringing home Sydney Nelson.
Olivia Daugherty led the Bearcats offense going three for three and driving in one run. Hannah Blackford and Alexis Kump both had one hit each, bringing in one run a piece.
Minnesota State returns to action Mar. 5 through Mar. 10 as they head to Clermont, Fla., to take part in the NTC Spring Games where they will play 10 games over five days. The Mavericks start the action off against the Tiffin University Dragons with first pitch slated for 9:00 a.m.
