Minnesota State Eliminated by NSIC Rival Bemidji State in NCAA Tournament

Mankato, Minn.--- No. 3 Minnesota State was upended by No. 2 Bemidji State in the second round of the NCAA tournament action with a final of 4-2 in overtime.
The Mavericks roared out of the gate as they controlled the ball for most of the first half. Maille Mathis capped off Minnesota State's great start with a goal in the 25th minute. Mathis shot left everyone watching as it went over the heads of all BSU defenders and off the crossbar to find the net.
BSU was eager to respond and mounted an attack off the whistle. On the next rush, BSU's Allyson Smith sent the only Bemidji shot in the first half past Mackenzie Rath to even the score in the 31st minute. The Mavericks outshot the Beavers 12-1 in the first half but failed to capture the momentum.
Bemidji State opened the second half with the ball and looked to flip the script in the shot department. At the 48th minute, Halle Peterson sent her shot past Rath giving BSU the lead early in the second half. Just a minute after BSU took the lead, MSU's Jenny Vetter made sure to answer quickly with a goal of her own.
At the end of regulation, the Mavericks continued to lead in shots 25-11 while getting 15 shots-on-goal. Both teams locked down defensively resulting in another overtime period.
Much like their win against Minot in the NSIC Championship, the Beavers played aggressively and forced the Mavericks to play most of the overtime period on defense. At the 101st minute, Maria Stocke sent a shot past the diving hands of Rath for the game-winning-goal. Moments later in the 108th minute, BSU's Sara Wendt took advantage of a deflated Maverick team to send home the Beavers four goals.
Minnesota State has been eliminated from the NCAA Tournament.
