Mankato, Minn. --- Fifth-rated Minnesota State got two goals from senior center
Sam Morton in downing #4 Minnesota Duluth 2-1 Saturday at Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center in downtown Mankato.
The Mavericks, who claimed a 6-0 win over the Bulldogs Friday and have now won the last six meetings with their in-state rival, up their record to 3-1-0 on the season with tonight's victory.
Minnesota State held a 1-0 lead after the first period of action on a goal from Morton. After a shot from the point from
Andy Carroll was turned aside by
Zach Stejskal, Morton buried a backhander at 7:37 for the first goal of the game and at the end of the first 20 minutes of action, the Mavericks held a 1-0 lead.
Morton, a Lafayette, Colo., native, converted on a power play chance after being set up on a nice sequence of passes from junior defensemen
Jake Livingstone and
Akito Hirose at 10:36 of the second.
The visiting Bulldogs cut the deficit to one when
Luke Loheit scored on the power play at 7:37 of the third period, but that was as close as it got
Freshman netminder
Alex Tracy, who earned a shutout in Friday's 6-0 win, finished with 15 saves Saturday in raising his record to 2-0-0 on the season.
The Mavericks continue nonconference action with a two-game series at St. Cloud State next Friday and Saturday.
