Mankato, Minn. --- Minnesota State defeated the Lewis University Flyers 6-2 on the final day of the Minnesota State DII Softball Classic.
With the results, the Mavericks move to 4-1 on the season while the Flyers fall to 2-2.
Game 1
Junior Mackenzie Ward (3-0) started the game for Minnesota State, and earned the win, throwing a complete game, allowing four runs, two of them earned, on nine hits while striking out five. Katie David (2-1) started for the Flyers and took the loss, pitching six innings and allowing six run on seven hits.
The Flyers got on the board first with a pair of runs in the top of third inning on hits that managed to find gaps in the defense. In the bottom of the third, after being walked,
Kayla Moky was driven in by a double to right center from
Carly Esselman to cut the Flyer lead to 2-1. After
Esselman advanced to second on an out,
Hailey Forshee drove her home with a single to right to tie the game.
With runners at first and second, Courtney Potter fought through a ten pitch at bat and on the tenth pitch she drilled the ball to dead center field to put MSU up 5-2. In the fourth inning MSU added another run when
Esselman smoked a ball to left centerfield which brought
Moky home, giving the Mavericks a 6-2 lead.
Esselman finished the game 3-4 from the plate including two doubles while batting in two runs.
Moky finished the game going 1-1 from the plate while earning two walks and two runs. Potter led the Mavericks with three RBI all coming from the three run homerun she hit.
Minnesota State will take a week off before traveling to Emporia, Kan., to participate in the Emporia State Softball Classic. Minnesota State will play two games each day over the three-day tournament, which is scheduled to take place from Friday, Feb. 21 through Sunday, Feb. 23.
