#3 Mavericks Start New Year With Alaska Visiting the Key City

Off the Hop
Minnesota State won one and lost one at the 2019 Mariucci Classic last weekend and heads into a WCHA home series this Friday and Saturday with the University of Alaska owning a 16-3-1 overall record.

In View
The Mavericks, who have won 11 of their last 13 games and are rated third is this week's USCHO and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls, stand 12-19-1 in the all-time series vs. Alaska. Minnesota State has captured wins in six of the last seven meetings vs. the Nanooks.

On the Cusp
Minnesota State has gone 199-83-22 under the guidance of head coach Mike Hastings, who is in his eighth season in charge of the Mavericks. No program in the nation has won more games (199) during the time Hastings has been behind the MSU bench.

At the Gate
Sophomore Dryden McKay, a five-time Western Collegiate Hockey Association Goaltender of the Week honoree this year, stands 15-2-1 with a .947 save percentage and 1.28 goals against average on the season.  The Downers Grove, Ill., native leads the country in wins, goals against average, save percentage and shutouts (he has five).  McKay's five shutouts this year stand tied for second on the school's single-season list.  His nine career shutouts rank third all-time at Minnesota State (Cole Huggins leads with 11 and Stephon Williams had ten).

Mnemonic Device
Senior forward Marc Michaelis, who scored his fourth game-winning goal of the year (and 11th career GWG) in last Saturday's 2-0 victory over Bemidji State, stands tied for eighth in the country in scoring with 11-12--23 in 20 games played for 2019-20. His 11 career GWGs stands tied for sixth all-time at Minnesota State.
        A three-time First Team All-WCHA selection and the 2019-20 WCHA Preseason Player of the Year, Michaelis is the NCAA's active career scoring leader with 141 points (62 Gs, 79 As) in 137 career games played.  His 141 points ranks fourth on Minnesota State's career scoring list for the DI-era.

Park and Rec
Senior forward Parker Tuomie, who registered a goal and an assist for a two-point weekend in two games at the Mariucci Classic, has 39-74--113 in 134 games for his four-year Minnesota State career. His 113 points ties for tenth on Minnesota State's career point-scoring list.

Jackpot
Junior defenseman Jack McNeely posted his first goal of the season when he tallied in last Saturday's game vs. St. Cloud State and has totalled 1-2--3 in the last four games. For the year the Lakeville, Minn., native has 1-5--6 and ranks third on the team with a +10 rating.

I'm Eighteen
Senior defenseman Ian Scheid hasn't missed a game in his four years with the Mavericks.  Scheid has 0-10--10 in 20 games played in 2019-20 and 22-63--85 in 141 career games. Scheid, who is +49 for his career, stands eighth on Minnesota State's career scoring list for defensemen.  In terms of DI-era blue liners, he's fifth in career scoring.

Green Jacket
Junior center Jared Spooner has 6-6--12 in 19 games played and leads Minnesota State with a +12 rating this year. The Bismarck, N.D., native has registered 17-41--58 in 100 career games.

Lucky #7
Junior winger Reggie Lutz registered his seventh goal of the season when he scored Minnesota State's second goal of the game in last Sunday's 2-0 win over Bemidji State.  His seven goals this year have equalled his career-high for goals in a season. Lutz owns 21-34--55 in 99 career games. 

Riese's Pieces
Senior defenseman Riese Zmolek, who has 1-3--4 in 19 games played this year, stands tied with Ian Scheid for the team lead in blocked shots with 29.

First Things First
Freshman defenseman Colby Bukes registered the first point of his career when he assisted on Reggie Lutz's goal in last Sunday's 2-0 win over Bemidji State.

May the Force be With You
Freshman forward Lucas Sowder, who assisted on Marc Michaelis' game-winning goal in last Saturday's 2-0 victory over Bemidji State, stands tied for 11th in the nation in freshman scoring with 14 points on three goals and 11 assists.

Florida Freshmen
Freshman Nathan Smith has racked up 4-12--16 in 18 games on the season to rank fifth in the nation in freshmen scoring. His point total ranks third on the Minnesota State scoring chart.

Jake's Place
Junior center Jake Jaremko, who has accrued 6-4--10 in 12 games this year, has registered six goals and three assists in Minnesota State's last ten games.  For this three-year Minnesota State career, the Nowthen, Minn., native has collected 28-40--68 in 89 games.

Statistically Speaking
Minnesota State has scored the game's first goal in 17 of 20 games this year.

The Mavericks enter this weekend's series vs. Alaska ranking first in the nation in wins (16) and power play percentage (.299, 23/77).  Minnesota State ranks second in the country in goals against average (1.50) and face-off percentage (.556).

Now in its 51st season, Minnesota State stands 935-656-156 all-time.
