Mankato, Minn. --- Minnesota State head coach Mike Hastings has announced that senior forwards C.J. Suess and Brad McClure, along with junior forward Max Coatta, have been named tri-captains for the 2017-18 Maverick men's hockey team.
Suess, a three-year letterwinner from Forest Lake, Minn., who also served as a team captain in 2016-17, has 35 goals and 49 assists for 84 points in 117 games for his Minnesota State career to stand tied for 21st on the school's career scoring list (for DI-era). An All-WCHA Second Team selection in 2016-17, Suess was selected in the fifth round, 129th overall, by Winnipeg in 2014 National Hockey League Draft.
McClure, a three-year letterwinner from Stratford, Ont., who served as an alternate captain in 2016-17, has 34 goals and 36 assists for 70 points and is +26 in 119 career games with the Mavericks. He was an All-WCHA Third Team pick in 2016-17.
Coatta, a two-year letterman from Minnetonka, Minn., enters this year with 11-15--26 and is +11 in 75 career games at Minnesota State. A member of the 2015-16 WCHA All-Rookie Team, Coatta was named the recipient of Minnesota State's Hardest Worker Award last year.
"I'm excited about the leadership group our locker room has selected as tri-captains," said Hastings, who has crafted a 122-62-18 record for a .649 winning percentage in his five seasons at the Minnesota State men's hockey helm. "They all bring something unique to the table to better our program in the upcoming season."
Minnesota State, which posted a 22-13-4 mark in 2016-17, opens the 2017-18 season with a exhibition game Oct. 1 at 5:07 p.m. at Verizon Center.
