Mankato, Minn. --- Jenny Hoerter,
Morgan Cottew and
Molly Sarafolean each scored once, and Minnesota State soccer shut out Gustavus Adolphus 3-0 in a rain-shortened exhibition match on Friday evening at The Pitch.
Hoerter, a senior midfielder, scored the first goal at 16:21 of the first half to give Minnesota State a 1-0 edge over Gustavus Adolphus — an NCAA DIII institution. The Mavericks controlled play — outshooting the Golden Gusties 13-2 in the half, but were unable to add to their lead.
After halftime, Cottew, a junior forward, and Sarafolean, a freshman forward, scored goals that were separated by just over two minutes. Cottew's goal came at 62:16 and Sarafolean's was at 64:23. The Mavericks led 3-0 after the back-to-back scores.
Minnesota State continued attacking and held a 22-6 edge in shots for the match, including a 14-3 advantage in shots on goal, when the game was called in the 79th minute, due to a thunderstorm.

Alexa Rabune split the time in net for the Mavericks. Rabune started the match followed by Livermore and Rydeen.
Minnesota State held a 10-1 edge in corner kicks.
Ashley Becker made 11 saves in net for Gustavus Adolphus.
Minnesota State begins its regular season with a nonconference match against Wisconsin-Parkside on Sept. 2 at 1:00 p.m., at The Pitch.
