SEARCY, Ark. --- The #6 Minnesota State softball team fell to #2 Harding, 3-2, in game two of the NCAA Central Super Regionals Friday afternoon. The two teams will resume play in game three tomorrow at 10:00 a.m., following a lightening postponement.
With the loss, Minnesota State moves to 58-7 on the season and its program-best win streak is brought to a halt at 28 games. With the win, Harding moves to 58-8 on the season. The best of three series is locked at 1-1 with teams resuming play tomorrow in game three.
Senior pitcher
Coley Ries (35-3) takes the loss throwing a complete game with five strikeouts. It was her first loss of the season since Pittsburgh State on March 19. Senior Hannah Johnson (24-5) earned the win tossing four strikeouts over 6.0 innings.
In game three, freshman
Amber Kral blasted a hit that was bobbled by the shortstop allowing junior
Jess Meidl to get across for the game's first run, 1-0, in the opening frame. After a scoreless second stanza, the Bisons retaliated to lock game, 1-1, after senior Courtney Derrick flied out to left field sending junior Madi Trump across.
Minnesota State regained the lead in the sixth inning after Kral connected on a single to send sophomore
McKenzie Paap home to make the score 2-1. The Bisons answered with a two run seventh inning. Senior Amanda Burdon and freshman Lindsey Duncan tallied the runs to capture the lead, 3-2. Minnesota State was not able to get anything going in the bottom half of the seventh and went on to fall 3-2.
Both teams registered four hits as a team. Senior
Dana Mogren, Meidl, Kral and Paap each notched a hit.
In game two, The Mavericks quickly loaded up the bases in the top of the first to steal the momentum and a 3-0 advantage. Senior
Samantha Buhmann connected on a hit allowing Paap to slide into home for the game's first run after a muffed throw by the catcher. Minnesota State added two more runs in the inning with scores from Kral and Meidl.
Harding battled back with a four run bottom half of the inning as rain began to fall at the Harding softball field. Sophomore Alexus Lawellin and freshman Autumn Humes scored before Trump hit a two run single to center field to steal the lead, 4-3. Rain and lighting then moved in delaying play for two hours until tournament officials decided to postpone play to Saturday.
