ST. JOSEPH, Mo. --- The Minnesota State softball team dismantled Northeastern State, 8-1, and Washburn, 7-3, at the Hy-Vee Classic.
With the wins, the Mavericks improve to 19-3 on the season and have won their last 13 straight games.
In game one, Minnesota State overwhelmed Northeastern State, 8-1. Senior pitcher
Coley Ries earned her 10th win of the season (10-1) after pitching a complete game with 15 strikeouts and six hits. She is now tied with Courtney McKelvogue (2010-13) for third all-time with 88 career wins. Sylver Collins takes the loss (6-4) giving up four hits in 1.2 innings.
Following a scoreless first inning,
Dana Mogren started the scoring with a two run RBI and her first home run of the season to left field, 2-0. Later in the inning,
Jess Meidl doubled to left field on a three run RBI to make the score 5-0.
Northeastern State got on the scoreboard in the third inning after a RBI double to left field, 5-1. Minnesota State retaliated in the fifth inning when
Samantha Buhmann connected on a RBI double to center field sending
Amber Kral home to make the score 6-1. The Mavericks went on add two more runs in the seventh inning to win the game, 8-1.
Minnesota State totaled 12 hits and 8 RBI as a team. Additonally, four Mavericks recorded multiple hits: Buhmann (3), Kral (3), Mogren (2), and Meidl (2).
In game two, Minnesota State upended Washburn, 7-3. Junior
Libby Bemis tossed 10 strikeouts over seven innings on the way to her ninth win of the season (9-2). Ashley Wills picks up the loss (6-3) after allowing nine hits in four innings.
Meidl got the Mavericks on the scoreboard in the first inning after stealing home to make the score 1-0. After a scoreless second inning, Minnesota State added one run in the third and one run in the fourth with scores from
McKenzie Paap and
Carly Esselman. The Mavericks led, 3-0, after four innings of play.
Minnesota State then went on to add four runs in the fifth inning to increase its lead to 7-0 after a two run RBI single to left field from Buhmann. Washburn attempted to make a late comeback in the sixth and seventh innings with a two run RBI home run to left field and a RBI single to center to draw within four, 7-3.
Minnesota State totaled 13 hits and five RBI in the win.
Minnesota State will return to action tomorrow vs. Nebraska-Kearney at 12:00 p.m., and Northwest Missouri State at 4:00 p.m.
