ST. CLOUD, Minn. --- The Minnesota State softball team swept Concordia-St. Paul, 9-0, and Viterbo, 12-0, on opening day at the Regional Crossover / Kelly LAAS Memorial Invite.
In game one, Minnesota State shutout Concordia-St. Paul, 9-0. Senior pitcher
Coley Ries picked up the win for the Mavericks as she totaled five innings and retired six batters. Golden Bears pitcher Linzy Heim recorded two strikeouts and gave up 10 hits in the loss.
The Mavericks jumped out to a 2-0 edge in the bottom of the first inning after
Samantha Buhmann connected on a double into right field which allowed
Ashley Thell to score a run. Both teams then went scoreless in the second inning. Minnesota State exploded for four runs in the bottom of the third inning highlighted by a two run
Amber Kral home run to right center which would also send Buhmann home. The Mavericks led after three innings of play, 6-0.
Minnesota State tacked on three more runs in the bottom fourth inning after a
Dana Mogren single up the middle to allow
Jess Meidl to score. Concordia-St. Paul would not be able extend the game in the top of the fifth inning after two batters grounded out and one lined out.
The Mavericks totaled 10 hits on 23 at bats while the Golden Bears posted two hits on 17 at bats.
In game two, Minnesota State rolled past Viterbo, 12-0. Junior pitcher
Libby Bemis earned the victory for the Mavericks as she posted 12 strike outs in five innings of work. V-Hawks pitcher Kayla McInereney picks up the loss after giving up nine hits in three innings played.
After a scoreless first inning, Minnesota State sprinted out to a 5-0 advantage in the top of the second inning.
Alyssa Rickels got the scoring started with her single to send home
Cori Kennedy on an RBI to make the score, 1-0. Later in the inning, Thell singled to center field to allow Meidl to score on an RBI and make the score 5-0.
The Mavericks added four more runs in the top of the third inning after Meidl doubled to left field on a two run RBI sending
McKenzie Paap and Rickels home and extend the lead to 9-0. After a scoreless fourth inning, Meidl hit a home run to center field for a three run RBI to put the game out reach, 12-0.
Minnesota State totaled 13 hits in 29 at bats while Viterbo recorded three hits on 18 appearances at the plate.
Following the wins, Minnesota State moves to 2-0 on the season. The Mavericks return to the diamond on Sunday to take on Nebraska-Kearny at 12:00 p.m., and Wisconsin-Parkside at 2:00 p.m.
