MANKATO, Minn. --- The top-seeded Maverick women's soccer team defeated fifth-seeded University of Mary 6-0 on Friday afternoon and will now face Augustana in the NSIC Tournament final Sunday, at 2:00 p.m.
The Minnesota State offense wasted no time getting onto the scoresheet against the Marauders in the first half of the NSIC Tournament semifinal match. A corner by senior
Jenny Hoerter was flicked on by sophomore
Alesha Duccini and finished from short range by sophomore
Bri Ciaccio in the second minute of play. Ciaccio's goal was her first of the season.
Junior
Lauren Kizlik earned a penalty for the Mavericks in the 22nd minute of the match – dribbling past two defenders and drawing a foul inside the penalty area. The ensuing penalty attempt by Hoerter was saved by U-Mary goalkeeper Hannah Smith.
Sophomore
Taylor Kenealy would double the Maverick advantage, scoring her fourth goal of the season in the 25th minute. Hoerter was able to pick out Kenealy in front of the Marauder goal, who supplied the finish for the second goal of the game.
Minnesota State would make it 3-0 before halftime. Freshman
Molly Sarafolean applied pressure to the Marauder defense, causing a giveaway, and scored with a shot to the back post.
After the break, Hoerter would convert off of a free kick in the 50th minute to extend the Maverick lead to 4-0. Scoring her eighth goal of the season, Hoerter was able to place her free kick over the wall and into the net at the near post.
Minnesota State would add two more goals before time was out. Sarafolean would score her second goal of the game in the 79th minute, and freshman
Danielle Tazic added the sixth goal of the contest with her first career goal for Minnesota State.
Junior goalkeeper
Taylor Livermore (9-1-1) made three saves while recording her ninth shutout of the season.
The Mavericks held the edge in shots (22-5), and corners (7, 0) throughout the match.
