Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Mavericks Lose to St. Cloud State 2-1 on Friday

Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's soccer team lost to St. Cloud State 2-1 in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match on Friday.

The Mavericks (1-2-1, 0-1-0 NSIC) and the Huskies (2-2-1, 1-0-1 NSIC) were tied 1-1 for much of the match, but St. Cloud State scored in the 85th minute to secure a 2-1 victory over Minnesota State.

Sophomore Morgan Cottew got the Mavericks on the scoreboard first with a goal -- her second of the season -- in the 18th minute. Senior Kiana Nickel dribbled up the midfield and passed the ball forward to a streaking Cottew, who raced past the St. Cloud State defenders and deposited the ball into the back of the net to give Minnesota State a 1-0 lead. Nickel picked up her first assist of the season on the play -- the 24th of her collegiate career.

The Maverick lead would not last long. Under two minutes after Cottew's goal, St. Cloud State responded as Kate Fearing scored her first goal of the season  -- the third of her career -- in the 20th minute.

Minnesota State had multiple chances to take the lead in both the first and second halves -- outshooting the Huskies 17-9, including a 9-5 advantage in shots on goals -- but the Mavericks were unable to get another shot past Julia Clifford (2-2-1), who made eight saves in goal for St. Cloud State.

The game remained tied 1-1 until the 85th minute when Maria Kass had a shot on goal for the Huskies. Maverick goalkeeper freshman Alexa Rabune (1-2-1) stopped the initial attempt but the rebound bounced to Hannah Marion, who laced the ball into the back of the net for the game-winning goal.

Minnesota State was unable to answer and St. Cloud State held on for the 2-1 victory.

The Mavericks' loss ends a 30-game NSIC unbeaten streak, with their last loss coming at Winona State 1-0 on Nov. 3, 2013.

Minnesota State returns to action when it faces Minnesota Duluth at The Pitch on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
