Wayne, Neb. --- The Minnesota State softball team picked up two more big wins on Saturday afternoon as it swept the Wayne State Wildcats.
It took 10 innings to settle game one as the Mavericks prevailed and won 5-4. MSU won game two 9-0 and it was highlighted by a no-hit performance from sophomore pitcher
Libby Bemis. This marks as her second career no-hitter in a Maverick uniform with her first one coming during her freshman season against Merrimack on March 11, 2015.
With the sweep, the Mavericks overall record sits at 39-12 and 22-5 in NSIC play.
In game one the Mavericks won a hard fought 5-4 win over the Wildcats in 10 innings. Junior
Ashley Thell was able to deliver a clutch solo home run in the tenth to put the Mavericks up for good. The MSU offense ended the game with 12 total hits, including a season-high three home runs, while the Wildcats finished the game with nine hits, including a home run.
Junior pitcher
Coley Ries [23-5] earned the win as she pitched all 10 innings and fanned 14 batters, while allowing nine hits and four earned runs. Cassy Miller [19-15] took the loss for WSC, as she pitched 9.1 innings and allowed five earned runs on 11 hits and a walk.
In the first and second MSU's offense pushed a run across each inning. With freshman
McKenzie Paap at third,
Ashley Thell was able to lay down a perfect bunt that brought home Paap for the Mavericks first run of the game. Then in the second inning, junior
Samantha Buhmann led-off for the Mavericks and she drilled a solo home run to center field to extend MSU's lead to 2-0.
After a scoreless third inning from both teams, the Wildcats scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, WSC's Emily Chandler was able to hit a solo home run to left center to cut the Mavericks lead to 2-1.
MSU was able to quickly answer in its next inning at-bat, as junior
Tatum Klein recorded her first home run of the season as she hit a solo shot to right field.
The Mavericks two-run lead was dwindled to one again in the sixth inning as Abbie Hix was able to record a bases loaded walk that scored Lexi Loos.
The back and forth affair continued throughout the rest of the game. In the top of the seventh MSU kept up with its theme an extended its lead back to two. Paap led-off the inning with a single to left field and she would score a little later as junior
Dana Mogren brought her home from second when she laced an RBI-single to right field. The Mavericks went into the bottom of the seventh with a 4-2 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh Ries was able to strikeout the Wildcats first batter before WSC strung together three straight hits to tie the game up at 4-4. Morgan Hoeg doubled to right center with one out and then Loos was next in the batter's box and she singled to left field and both runners were able to move up to third and second after a throwing error from MSU. Katelyn Wobken was able to deliver a clutch two-RBI single to center field to score both runners and to tie the game up. Ries was far from over to getting out of the inning though, as the Wildcats were able to load the bases later on with still only one out recorded. However, the Mankato East product dug deep and got WSC's next two batters out to send the game to extras.
In the eighth, neither team was able to get a runner on the base paths. In the ninth, MSU was again unable to get anything started. For WSC, it threatened to score the potentially game-winning run in the ninth as it had runners on second and first with one out but again Ries struck out the Wildcats next two batters to send the game into the tenth.
In the tenth, Thell delivered the late game heroics for the Mavericks as she hit a lead-off home run to give MSU the 5-4 lead.
In the bottom of the inning the Wildcats did not go down without a fight. Ries found herself in another jam as WSC loaded the bases with no outs, but she was able to get the Wildcats next three batters out to give MSU the win.
Mogren finished the game 3-for-5 from the plate with an added RBI, while Paap ended the game going 3-for-5 as well and tallied a team-high two runs scored.
In game two, the Mavericks took down the Wildcats 9-0 in five innings.
Libby Bemis [14-7] earned her second career "no-hitter" and her 14
th win of the season. Bemis struck out three batters in the win and allowed just one walk.
Shelby Wobken suffered the loss for WSC as she pitched two innings and allowed four earned runs on six hits and two walks. Riley Vanderveen pitched the last three inning for the Wildcats and she allowed five hits and three earned runs.
MSU struck quickly in the game as it pushed across two runs in the first.
McKenzie Paap led-off the game with a single to left field and she would score later in the inning when
Dana Mogren tallied an RBI single to center field. Mogren would advance to second on the throw and that would pay off as sophomore
Jess Meidl recorded an RBI-single to left field to bring Mogren home.
The Mavericks extended their lead to 6-0 in the third as they scored four more runs in the inning. MSU was able to load the bases with no outs and sophomore
Kara Lattery took advantage of it as she notched a two-run single to righter center that scored
Ashley Thell and Meidl. Next batter was freshman
Cori Kennedy and she recorded a sac fly to center field that scored
Samantha Buhmann from third. Lattery eventually scored MSU's final run of the inning after a throwing error from WSC.
Three more runs were scored by the Mavericks in the fifth inning. With two outs, pinch hitter
Alyssa Rickels and Paap stood at third and second, respectively, with Mogren at the plate and she was able to deliver a two-RBI single through the left side to push MSU's lead to 8-0. Mogren scored the Mavericks ninth run of the game when Thell brought her home on a single to right center.
Mogren paced the Mavericks offense in the win as she finished 3-for-4 from the plate with three RBI and two runs scored. Paap also went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Thell went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Mavericks will close out their regular season Sunday with a doubleheader against Augustana in Sioux Falls, S.D. Game times are set for 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. MSU will need just one more win to claim its fourth NSIC championship in the last five years. Â
