Aberdeen, S.D. --- The Minnesota State softball was swept by Northern State on Sunday afternoon in Aberdeen, S.D. The Mavericks lost by the scores of 3-2 and 9-1 in five innings.
With the two losses, MSU's overall record sits at 30-11 and 13-4 in NSIC play.
In game one, NSU rallied late against the Mavericks as it scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the 3-2 win.
Junior
Coley Ries [17-5] took the loss for MSU as she allowed one earned run on seven hits and one walk in 6.2 innings pitched. Ries also struckout 13 batters in the loss. Jamie Fisher started for the Wolves and earned the win as she pitched all seven innings after allowing two earned runs on nine hits and one walk.
MSU scored the first two runs in the game both of which came in the top of the third. Junior
Samantha Buhmann drove in the Mavericks first run of the game as she tallied an RBI-single to right field that scored sophomore
Alyssa Rickels from third. Buhmann would eventually score MSU's second run of the inning when sophomore
Kara Lattery singled through the left side to bring her racing home.
NSU scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth when Katie Dawson laced a RBI-double to right field that scored Brittany Lash. After five innings, the Mavericks led 2-1 over the Wolves.
In the seventh, the Mavericks were trying to add some insurance runs as they had runners on third and second with one out. However, the runs never came across for MSU as Buhmann was in the batters box and she lined into an inning ending, double play to the third baseman that was able to tag out the Mavericks runner at third as well on the play.
In the bottom half of the seventh, Ries struck out the Wolves first two batters in the inning, before they strung together two straight singles to score their second run of the game. With a runner still on third, Katelynn Dilts notched the walk-off winner for the Wolves as she hit an RBI-single up the middle to give NSU the 3-2 win.
In the second game of the day, MSU's offense tallied just four hits in the 9-1 loss, while NSU posted 10 total hits, including four extra base hits.
The Wolves scored one run in the bottom of the second after Macey Engel hit a solo home run down the left field line.
In the third, NSU opened up the game as it strung together six hits and six runs in the inning. The Wolves brought 12 batters to the plate in the run filled inning.
NSU added its two final runs of the game in the next inning as Rachel Albright hit a two-run homer to right center that scored Katelynn Dilts as well.
The Mavericks scored their lone run of the game in the top of the fifth when
Alyssa Rickels notched an infield RBI-single that scored freshman
Cori Kennedy.
Sophomore
Libby Bemis [11-6] started and took the loss for the Mavericks as she pitched in 2.1 innings and allowed six earned runs and six hits. Senior
Katie Koponen came in for Bemis in the third and she closed out the game for MSU as she allowed two earned runs and four hits in 1.2 innings.
Missy Elkins [10-10] earned the win for the Wolves, as she allowed just one earned run and four hits in the win.
Next up for MSU will be a weekday doubleheader against Winona State. The Mavericks will travel to Winona, Minn. to face the Warriors on Tuesday. Game times are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
