St. Joseph, Mo. --- The Minnesota State softball team closed out its final day of competition at the Apple Market Classic on Sunday afternoon with a 1-1 record. The day was highlighted by MSU's junior pitcher
Coley Ries throwing a "no-hitter" against Central Oklahoma. The Mavericks defeated UCO 5-0 to begin the day and they closed it out with a 4-3 loss to #19 Northwest Missouri State.
This marks as Ries' third career "no-hitter" in a Maverick uniform, as she tallied her first two in back-to-back games last season. In Sunday's game she struck out 16 Bronchos batters, including eight straight to close out the game. With the shutout victory Ries has earned her 11th win on the season and she extended her scoreless innings streak to 41.1 innings.
Offensively, the Mavericks scored all five of their runs in the first three innings. UCO's Nicole Brady [9-2] picked up her second loss of the season as she allowed six hits and two earned runs.
In the top of the ninth MSU got its first two runners on base safely and the middle of the order took advantage of it. Junior
Dana Mogren put the first run on the board for the Mavericks when she tallied a sac fly to center field that brought in lead-off hitter freshman
McKenzie Paap in from third. A couple of batters later MSU scored run number two as sophomore
Kara Lattery also flied out to center field for sac fly that brought home senior
Tatum Klein.
In the second inning the Mavericks chipped in one more run as junior Ashley Thell scored from third on a UCO wild pitch.
In the third the Mavericks scored its last two runs of the game when Lattery delivered again with a two-RBI home run to left center that scored Mogren as well.
Lattery led the way offensively for MSU as she finished with three RBI, two hits and two stolen bases.
In the second game of the day against #19 Northwest Missouri State the Mavericks fell 4-3. NWSU was leading 4-0 over MSU heading into the top of the sixth before the Mavericks closed the deficit. MSU trimmed the run difference to one as it pushed across three runs in the top half of the sixth.
In the inning
Dana Mogren tallied her second sac fly of the day to left field that brought in
McKenzie Paap from third to give MSU's first run of the game. A few batters later was
Kara Lattery and her momentum from game one carried over to game two as she hit her second home run of the day in the sixth. Lattery belted a two run shot to center field that scored sophomore
Jess Meidl as well to cut the Bearcats lead to one, 4-3, heading into the bottom of the sixth.
In the top of the seventh the Mavericks had the tying run on second with one out but nothing materialized for the Purple and Gold.
The Bearcats scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the third as Rebecca Maher doubled home Jaedra Moses. Then two innings later NWSU extended its lead to 4-0 after Alexis Kelsey tallied a two-RBI single that scored Torri Blythe and Kiana Baderdeen. The Bearcats final run came when Madison Jones earned a walk with the bases loaded.
Sophomore
Libby Bemis [6-4] took the loss for the Mavericks as she completed 4.1 innings and allowed four earned runs and nine hits.
Coley Ries came in relief midway through the fifth to finish out the game and she struck out four batters to extend her scoreless innings streak to 43.
The Bearcats Kendle Schieber [11-3] earned the win as she pitched 5.2 innings of work and allowed three earned runs and six hits. Her teammate Rachel Smith finished out the game with a four out save.
MSU sits with a 17-7 overall record heading into NSIC play. The Mavericks will begin conference play with a doubleheader against Concordia-St. Paul on Tuesday in St. Paul, Minn. Game times are set for 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
