St. Cloud, Minn. --- The Minnesota State softball team fell twice on Day 2 at the NSIC/MIAA Crossover in St. Cloud, Minn. In game one MSU took on #16 Missouri Western State and fell 3-1, before falling to Emporia State in game two, 4-3.
With the two losses, the Mavericks overall record falls to 3-4.
In game one the Griffons got on the board first as Katie Klostermann hit a two-run shot to left center in the bottom of the second. MWSU tallied its final run of the game in the bottom of the fourth after Morgan Rathmann ripped a two-out RBI triple to bring home Klosterman from third.
In the top of the fifth inning, junior
Dana Mogren got the Mavericks on the board as she belted a solo home run to straight centerfield.
MSU tallied just four hits in the loss, as Mogren accumulated two of them.
Junior
Coley Ries [2-3] picked up the loss for the Mavericks as she pitched all six innings and struck out nine batters. In doing so, Ries passed 600 career strikeouts as a Maverick as she now stands with 607 strikeouts in her career.
In game two the Mavericks struck quickly as they crossed two runs across the plate in the bottom first inning. Mogren once again delivered for the Mavericks as she posted a two-RBI single that brought home senior
Tatum Klein and sophomore
Jess Meidl.
In the top of the third, the Lady Hornets took the lead as they poured in three runs. Caitlin VanVleck started the scoring as she hit a two-RBI double that brought home Morgan Swisher and Katie Yoakum. Next batter up for ESU, Sarah Glass, she finished off the inning with a sac fly to the centerfielder that had was able bring VanVleck across the plate.
The Lady Hornets scored their final run in the top of the sixth as Cassidy Berry reached on a fielder's choice that brought in Carlie McCombs from third.
Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh, the Mavericks made it interesting as they pushed across one run home. Senior
Emily Bransky singled home Klein from second. But the one run was not enough as the Hornets defeated the Mavericks, 4-3.
Sophomore pitcher
Libby Bemis [1-2] picked up the loss for MSU as she pitched all seven innings and struck out two batters, while giving up five hits and three earned runs.
The Mavericks will play their final game at the NSIC/MIAA Crossover Saturday morning at 7:00 a.m. MSU will take on Fort Hays State.
