Bentonville, Ark. --- The Minnesota State softball team fell to Southeastern Oklahoma State, 5-4, on Day 2 at the UAM 8-State Classic.
With the loss, MSU's overall record falls to 1-2 overall.
Heading into the bottom of the sixth the score was knotted up at 4-4 as SE was up to bat. The Storms Jordan James changed matters though as she hit a solo shot to give SE a 5-4 lead and eventually the win.
Junior
Coley Ries [1-2] pitched all six innings for the Mavericks, while striking out six batters and giving up two walks. SE's Emily Cudd [2-1] earned the win as she came in relief of starting pitcher Jessica Seay. Cudd entered the third inning with two outs and gave up no runs in her 4.2 innings pitched.
The Storm got into the scoring column first in the game as Jessica Simmons crossed plate on a sac fly to give SE a 1-0 after one inning.
In the top half of the second sophomore
Kara Lattery began the inning with a lead-off double and eventually scored after an error from SE. Heading into the bottom of the second, the score stood at 1-1.
In the bottom of the second the Storm retook the lead as they poured in three runs for a 4-1 lead. Pinch runner Kennedy Been scored the first run in the inning as Mykaela Wallace reached on a fielder choice. The next batter up, Keeshia Thompson, dropped a sac bunt to bring in Jasmine Morales across the plate. Couple of batters later, Simmons brought home Wallace to give the Storm their fourth run of the game.
In MSU's next inning up to bat, it immediately responded back and tied the game up at 4-4 heading into the bottom of the third. After a lead-off single and advancing to second on the next at-bat, senior
Emily Bransky stood at second before junior
Samantha Buhmann ripped a single to bring home Bransky. Next up for the Mavericks was junior
Dana Mogren and she answered with a two-run home run to even the score.
In the next two innings the score remained tied between the two teams until James solo shot in the bottom of the sixth gave SE a one run lead.
In the top of the seventh the Mavericks made things interesting as sophomore
Jess Meidl was on third base with one out after a double and a stolen base. However, Meidl was left stranded on third as MSU's next two batters struck out swinging and popped out at third to end the game.
Bransky, Lattery, Buhmann and senior
Karli DesLauriers each collected two hits in the loss.
