No. 4 Minnesota State Suffers First Loss of the Season vs. No. 12 Grand Valley

Allendale, Mich. --- The fourth-rated Mavericks struggled to get any momentum going in first loss of 2015 Sunday afternoon in Allendale, Mich.

The No. 4 Mavericks were unable to match the intensity Grand Valley brought in the first half of the contest., In the fifth minute of action, junior Clare Carlson booted in a shot off of a rebound in front of Minnesota State goalkeeper Lauren Hoeppner (Lakeville, Minn.) to put the Lakers up 1-0. Then, in the 39th minute of play, senior Katie Bounds passed the ball across the box to junior Marti Corby who tapped the ball into the left side of net., Corby's third goal of the season gave the Lakers a 2-0 going into the second half.

Hoeppner made six saves throughout the first half while MSU was out shot 8-1 in shots on goal.

The second half of play only saw one ball hit the back of the net during the 45 minute span. In the 72nd minute of the match, Grand Valley's lead was cut to one goal that started with a Maverick corner kick. Sophomore Bri Lindstrom (Apple Valley, Minn.) lined up the ball in the right corner and booted it into the box where junior Dana Savino (Vanais Heights, Minn.) squared up a header that bounced before escaping the reach of Laker goal keeper Emily Maresh.

Minnesota State out shot the Lakers in the second half in shots on goal 7-2. In the end the Mavericks were out shot 16-13 and 10-8 in shots on goal. Hoeppner accumulated eight saves throughout the match and moves here record to 3-1 on the season.

Minnesota State next match up will come Saturday, September 19th vs. NSIC foe, the University of Sioux Falls at 1 p.m. at The Pitch.
