Mankato, Minn.--- The Minnesota State softball team picked up a pair of five inning victories over Minnesota State Moorhead on Saturday afternoon at the MSU Softball Diamond. The Mavericks defeated the Dragons 10-2 in game one, before MSU shutout MSUM in game two, 10-0.
Game two saw sophomore
Coley Ries (14-12) throw her second straight no hitter in consecutive days, as the Mankato East product fanned eight Dragon batters in the win. Picking up the loss for the Dragons was Kristen Nordby, as she gave up two earned runs in her only inning, while striking out two batters.
MSU scored one run in every inning when up to bat, as the Mavericks recorded 16 hits, including two home runs by sophomore's
Dana Mogren and
Ashley Thell.
In the first inning, began the game with a two RBI single up the middle that scored junior
Emily Bransky and Mogren. In the bottom half of the second, junior
Tatum Klein singled home sophomore
Samantha Buhmann from second.
In the next two innings, the Mavericks would push across two runs in each, as sophomore
Mandi Mauch notched a RBI off of a fielder's choice that scored freshman
Jess Meidl from third. Next up, freshman
Jordan Mauch singled home Buhmann as she tallied a RBI single up the middle. In the fourth the Mavericks continued their prowess, as Mogren cranked a solo home run to left field, before sophomore
Molly Sager singled home Thell from second. After four innings, the Mavericks led 7-0.
In the final inning, MSU tallied three more runs to finish off the game, as Thell added to her stat sheet when she nailed a three run homer run to right center, that scored Klein and Bransky.
Thell finished the game with five RBI, three hits and two runs, while Mogren, Bransky and Buhmann each collected two hits a piece in the win.
MSU began the day with 10-2 win over the Dragons, as the Mavericks tallied 14 hits in their five inning win , including six extra base hits with two home runs, two triples and two doubles.
Freshman pitcher
Libby Bemis (14-3) earned the win as she pitched all five innings while giving up just three hits and struck out two batters. Morgan Nybo (9-11) took the loss for the Dragons, as she posted two strikeouts.
MSUM scored its two runs of the game in the first inning, as the Dragons recorded three walks and one hit in the inning.
MSU scored runs in all four innings it batted in, as the Mavericks tallied three runs right away in the first inning. Meidl started the scoring with a fielder's choice that scored Bransky from third. Next batter up, Sager cranked a two RBI triple to right field that pushed across Mogren and Thell.
In the second inning MSU added on to its lead as they mustered five more runs, to put the Purple and Gold up six after two innings. Klein tripled to left center to bring in Jordan Mauch, before Bransky singled in Klein. Couple of batters later, Thell belted a two RBI double to right center that pushed across Bransky and Mogren. To finish out the inning, Sager added to her stat with a RBI single to right field, which brought in Thell from second.
In the third inning Mogren nailed a solo home run to center field, before Meidl matched her the next inning, as she belted a solo home run to right center.
Mogren ended the game with three hits and three runs, while Sager led the way with three RBI. Thell and Meidl also collected two RBI in the win.
The Mavericks will return to action on Tuesday, as MSU will play host to Winona State at the MSU Softball Diamond. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
