CLERMONT, Fla. --- The Minnesota State softball team turned in a dominant performance Sunday morning as it shutout Shippensburg 6-0, before blanking Ferris State 10-0 in five innings. With the wins, MSU improves to 7-5 on the season.
In game one of the day, the Mavericks shutout Shippensburg University, 6-0, as MSU was able to record 13 hits, including three extra base hits in the win. The Mavericks were also able notch five stolen bases.
Pitching for the Mavericks was sophomore
Coley Ries (5-5), as she claimed the win over the Raiders. Ries pitched six innings and was able to strike out seven SU batters, while giving up just four hits and one walk. Junior
Katie Koponen came in relief for Ries in the seventh inning to close out the game.
The Mavericks would push across their first run of the game in the top of the second as sophomore
Samantha Buhmann began the inning with a lead-off triple. Next up for MSU was sophomore
Molly Sager and she brought in Buhmann from third, as Sager posted a sac fly to left field.
MSU would drive in four more runs in the third inning that was capped off by a two-run RBI-double from sophomore
Dana Mogren. To begin the inning, juniors
Emily Bransky and
Tatum Klein would notch consecutive singles, which led to a sac fly from sophomore
Ashley Thell to right field. Klein would score after a throwing error from a Raiders player, which helped Buhmann reach base safely. Sager would then single to center field, which led to a double from Mogren to center field, that led to Buhmann and Sager crossing the plate.
The Purple and Gold would push across their final run of the game in the fifth inning as Sager singled home Thell from second, which led to the 6-0 victory for the Mavericks.
Mogren led the way with three hits, two RBI and one walk, while Sager posted two hits, two RBI and one run. Klein and freshman
Kara Lattery would also post two hits of their own, as Klein led the team with two stolen bases, while Buhmann led the Mavericks with two runs scored.
MSU wrapped up Sunday with a 10-0 win over the Ferris State Bulldogs in five innings.
Freshman
Libby Bemis (2-0) recorded her first career shutout as she threw five scoreless innings, while striking out three batters. She gave up just three hits as well. Sam Bates took the loss as she gave up nine runs, eight earned, through 4.1 innings.
The Mavericks got on the scoreboard right away in the top of the first as Buhmann plated both Thell and freshman
Jess Meidl with an RBI-single to give the Mavericks an early 2-0 lead. MSU would take a 3-0 lead after an RBI-triple from Meidl in the top of the third as Klein came around to score.
Lattery would add two more runs for the Mavericks in the top of the third as she drove in Mogren and freshman
Alyssa Rickels with an RBI-single to put MSU up 5-0. A single by Thell in the top of the fourth brought Kelin around to give MSU a 6-0 lead before the Mavericks notched four runs in the fifth inning.
Junior
Laura Milligan got the scoring going in the top of the fifth with an RBI-single, before Klein drove in two more runs with an RBI-triple to make it 9-0 in favor of the Mavericks. Meidl would drive in Klein with an RBI-double for the games final run as the Mavericks secured the 10-0 victory.
Four Mavericks had multiple hits in the win over the Bulldogs, including Klein, Meidl and Buhmann who each posted three hits and two runs batted in. Klein also scored four runs and stole two bases as well.
The Mavericks continue play in the College Spring Games on Monday as they take on Maryville and Hillsdale. Game times are scheduled for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
