CLERMONT, Fla. --- The Minnesota State softball team went 1-1 Wednesday at the College Spring Games, including a 10-0, six-inning win over Merrimack that saw freshman
Libby Bemis throw the team's first no hitter in nearly two years.
With her no hitter against Merrimack, Bemis improved to 5-0 on the season and has now won her last five starts. Through six innings, she tallied eight strikeouts, while allowing just three walks. The last Maverick to record a no hitter was Courtney McKelvogue, who threw a perfect game against Bemidji State back on March 30, 2013.
Alexis Perry took the loss for the Warriors as she allowed three runs in one inning pitched.
The Mavericks wasted no time in taking the lead as they built a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Junior
Tatum Klein singled and stole second, before freshman
Jess Meidl reached first on a walk. After a passed ball moved the runners to second and third, sophomore
Samantha Buhmann drove in both runners with an RBI-single.
MSU added another run in the top of the second.
Dana Mogren led off the inning with a double. She then stole third base and advanced home on a throwing error by the catcher to make it 3-0.
The Mavericks then added four runs in the top of the fifth to take a 7-0 lead. Klein and Buhmann each recorded RBI-singles, while freshman
Kara Lattery notched an RBI-double.
MSU then added three more runs in the top of the sixth to go up 10-0, before Bemis closed the door in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore
Ashley Thell plated both Klein and Bransky with an RBI-triple, before Buhmann drove her in with a single to record the game's final run.
Three Mavericks tallied multi-hit games against the Warriors, including Klein who notched four hits and three runs scored. Buhmann added three hits of her own, to go along with four runs batted in.
MSU began the day with a 3-1 loss to Kutztown in eight innings.
Savanna Nierintz picked up the win for the Golden Bears as she allowed just one run in eight innings, while giving up one run and notching 11 strikeouts. Sophomore
Coley Ries (5-7) took the loss as she gave up three runs on seven hits, in eight innings of work. Ries recorded nine strikeouts as well.
The scoreboard remained empty through the top of the sixth inning as each team stranded a pair of runners on the base paths.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Mavericks notched the game's first run as Klein, who reach base via a single, was driven in by a two-out, RBI-double off the bat of Thell to give the Mavericks the 1-0 lead.
The top of the seventh inning saw the Golden Bears down to their last out with runners on first and second. Rachel Lawes then hit a single to center field that brought in tying run. Ries managed to get the last out in the top of the inning, but the Mavericks were unable to answer in the bottom of the seventh as Kutztown forced extras.
With the international tiebreaker rule in effect, KU began the eighth with a runner on second. After a bunt single put runners on the corners, the Golden Bears saw their lead runner caught stealing at the plate, with the runner of first moving up to second. Danielle Amato then drove in the go ahead run with a double to center field. A single and a fielder's choice would bring in Kutztown's second run of the inning before the game headed to the bottom of the eighth with the Golden Bears leading 3-1, where Kutztown set the Mavericks down in order to secure the win.
MSU wraps up play in the College Spring Games on Thursday as they take on Northwood and Tiffin. Game times are scheduled for 4 p.m., and 6 p.m., respectively.
