Box Score Mankato, Minn. --- Two-time defending Canadian national champion Alberta never trailed in claiming a 3-2 win over Minnesota State in men's college hockey exhibition action Sunday in Mankato.
The Golden Bears jumped out quickly, tallying at 5:35 on a goal from Dylan Bredo. Bredo made it a 2-0 lead at 13:34 when his shot from the wall bounced off a skate past Minnesota State netminder Cole Huggins at 13:34. Brett Ferguson's shot from the side of the net bounced off a shin pad and off the post before entering the Minnesota State net at 23-second mark of the second period as the Golden Bears upped their lead to 3-0.
Minnesota State junior forward Michael Huntebrinker stole the puck in the offensive zone and snapped a shot from the high slot past UA goaltender Luke Siemens at 4:17 of the second to put the Mavericks on the board for the first time. Sophomore forward C.J. Franklin ripped a shot past Siemens at the 24-second mark of the third to make it a one-goal game, but the Mavericks were unable to get the equalizer in the remainder of the final stanza.
Alberta outshot the Mavericks by a 31-25 margin in the game.
Next action for Minnesota State is next Friday and Saturday when Nebraska Omaha visits for a pair of nonconference games.
