#1 Mavericks Gird For North Star Cup

21745On Tap:  Top-rated Minnesota State (18-4-1 overall, 15-2-1 WCHA) takes a break from Western Collegiate Hockey Association action this weekend by participating in the Second Annual North Star College Cup presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota.

The Mavericks square-off against the University of Minnesota at Xcel Energy Center (17,954) Friday (7:00 p.m.) in downtown St. Paul.  Minnesota State will play Saturday at 4:00 or 7:0 p.m.) CST vs. either Bemidji State or Minnesota-Duluth.

Minnesota State Most Recently:  Minnesota State stands 18-4-1 overall (15-2-1 WCHA) after a conference road sweep (2-1 and 3-1) at Ferris State last weekend.

Unbeaten in their last eight games, Minnesota State enters the North Star College Cup having gone 13-1-1 in its last 15 games.

Minnesota State All-Time:  The Minnesota State men's hockey program, begun in 1969-70, completed its 45th year of competition last year.  Minnesota State is in its 19th year as a member of NCAA Division I (first DI season was 1997-98) and the Mavericks are in their 16th season as members of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. The Mavericks sport an all-time record of 804-605-139 (.564).

Polling: Following last weekend's road league sweep at Ferris State, Minnesota State is rated #1 in the nation for the second consecutive week according to polls released by USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine. The #1-ranking the last two weeks mark the first time Minnesota State has been rated #1 in either poll in the history of the Maverick men's hockey program.

All Three Zones:   Minnesota State ranks first in the nation in wins (18), winning percentage (.804), power play goals (25), goal margin (+38), shot margin (+290), fewest shots on goal allowed per game (21.43) and shots on goal margin per game (+12.6).
