Box Score MANKATO, Minn. --- In their toughest battle so far on the young season, the Mavericks stood tall, handing No. 1 Grand Valley State their first loss of the season by a score of 1-0.
With the win MSU moves to 4-0-0 on the season while GVSU falls to 3-1-0 overall.
MSU came out of the gates running having a couple of scoring chances early on but had nothing to show for it. The Lakers would push back with a couple scoring chances of their own but senior goalkeeper
Molly McGough stood true to the test. At the half the Mavericks and Lakers were scoreless with MSU holding the advantage on shots 9-5.
The second half the Mavericks really stepped up the pressure and were finally able to score in the 82nd minute. Junior
Korey Kronforst received a perfect pass from sophomore
Kiana Nickel and broke away from the defense sliding a shot past the GVSU goalkeeper to give MSU the 1-0 lead. MSU's defense did everything they could to stop the Lakers final push as they held them to just five total shots on the day compared to the Mavericks 14.
McGough adds another shutout to her career pushing her total to 35 and improves her record to 4-0-0 on the season.
MSU will be back in action on Saturday as they travel to Sioux Falls, S.D., to take on the University of Sioux Falls at 1 p.m.
