Mavericks Looks to Build Off of 2013-14's Broadmoor Trophy Championship and Second Consecutive Appearance in NCAA Tournament


On Tap:    Minnesota State (0-0-0 overall, 0-0-0 WCHA) is at Nebraska Omaha (0-0-0, NCHC) in nonconference action this weekend in the first games of 2014-15 for the Mavericks.  MSU and UNO play in Omaha at CenturyLink Center Omaha (15,959) Friday (7:37 p.m.) and Saturday (7:07 p.m.) CST.

Minnesota State Most Recently:  The Mavericks hosted Trinity Western University (B.C.) in exhibition action Sunday and came away with a 12-1 win. Junior forward Bryce Gervais had two goals and two assists in the win over Trinity as the Mavericks outshot the visiting Spartans 53-5.  Senior defenseman Brett Stern scored twice and assisted on another, while sophomore forward Michael Huntebrinker chipped in with a pair of goals and senior forward Jean-Paul Lafontaine had a goal and two assists.

About Nebraska Omaha:  UNO returns 14 letterwinners from last year's team that went 17-18-2. Top returning scorers include senior forward Dominic Zombo (17-17--34), sophomore forward Jake Guentzel (7-27--34) and sophomore defenseman Ian Brady (4-17--21). senior netminder Ryan Massa saw action in 22 games in 2013-14 while going 11-9-1 with a 2.74 goals against average an .899 save percentage. Dean Blais is in his sixth season as head coach of the UNO men's hockey program and owns a 91-86-18 (.513) mark at the Maverick helm. Blais is in his 16th year as a college head coach and during that time has crafted a 353-201-51 (.626) mark.

MSU All-Time:  The Minnesota State men's hockey program, begun in 1969-70, completed its 45th year of competition last year.  

MSU is in its 19th year as a member of NCAA Division I (first DI season was 1997-98) and the Mavericks are entering their 16th season as members of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

The Mavericks sport an all-time record of 786-601-138 (.561).

Leadership Corps:   Serving as team captains for Minnesota State in 2014-15 are senior forward Chase Grant and senior defenseman Brett Stern.  Alternate captains are senior defenseman Zach Palmquist and sophomore defenseman Carter Foguth.
