Box Score Mankato, Minn. --- 12th-rated Minnesota State completed a weekend sweep over Alabama-Huntsville by claiming a 4-1 win in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action Saturday in Mankato.
The Mavericks jumped out to a 1-0 first-period lead at 13:52 when senior forward Chase Grant scored his third goal of 2014-15 with assists from Jordan Nelson and Zach Palmquist.
The Chargers got a goal from Josh Kestner at 9:07 of the second to make it 1-1, but a nifty move in front of the UAH net that resulted in a goal by junior forward Bryce Gervais with the Mavericks on the power play at 11:01 gave the home team a 2-1 lead after two periods of play.
It became a 3-1 Minnesota State lead at 5:07 of the third when junior forward Teddy Blueger scored from in front of the net for his second goal of the season. Gervais got his second goal of the game on a shorthanded breakaway chance at 10:11 to make it 4-1 and that's how the game ended.
The Mavericks went one-for-six in power play chances on the night, while UAH converted was zero-for-one in opportunities with the man advantage. Minnesota State owned a 41-9 advantage in shots on goal in the game as junior net minder Stephon Williams upped his record to 3-0-0 on the season with the win.
The game was played in front of 3,086 fans at Verizon Wireless Center.
Now 4-2-0 (2-0-0 WCHA) for the season, the Mavericks continue conference action with a road series at Bowling Green next Friday and Saturday.
