No. 1 Minnesota State Ready to Entertain Wayne State and No. 22 Augustana

What's On Tap: The No. 1 rated Minnesota State soccer team is ready for another weekend of conference play as they play host to Wayne State on Saturday before taking on No. 22 Augustana at The Pitch.

MSU is off to its best start in school history with a current record of 12-0-0 and 9-0-0 in the NSIC. The Mavericks remain the only team in NCAA Division II with a perfect 1.000 won-loss-tied percentage.
 
Looking Back at Last Week: Minnesota State picked up a couple of road wins last weekend, defeating Minot State 3-1 before traveling to Bismarck, N.D. to defeat the University of Mary 3-0. The Mavericks used five different goal scorers in their two wins.

Against Minot State the Mavericks got on the board a little over halfway through the first half as senior Emily Moris shot a rocket from twenty yards out that bent into the left side of the goal to give MSU a 1-0 lead. Minot State would answer before the half ended to tie up the score at half. In the second half senior Rebecca Pederson scored her first goal of the season and and own goal by the Beavers sealed the deal for the Mavericks.

On Sunday against the Marauders, the Mavericks defense allowed just two shots all afternoon as senior Molly McGough was only tested once. Junior Korey Kronforst scored her 10th goal of the season and league-leading fifth game-winning goal off a centering pass from Moris to put MSU up early. Sophomore Dana Savino scored off a penalty kick and freshman Jenny Hoerter tallied her third goal of the season to preserve the win for the Mavericks.

NSCAA Rankings: The Minnesota State soccer team moved up to the top spot in the NSCAA/Continental Tire rankings poll that came out on Tuesday afternoon. This mark's the second time the MSU soccer program has been ranked No. 1 as they rose to the top during the 2012 season for one week.

Other Maverick programs that have been ranked No. 1 include the men's basketball team in 2005, wrestling twice during the 2007-08 season, womens basketball three times during the 2008-09 season and football six straight weeks during the 2013 season.

Scouting the Wildcats: Wayne State comes into play this weekend with a 1-10-1 overall record and have yet to win a match in the NSIC going 0-9-0 in league play. They are currently on a 10 match losing streak. This past weekend they dropped a pair of matches to Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State.

Head coach Tom Cliff is in his second season at the helm of the Wildcat's program and holds a record of 3-24-3. Juniors McKenzie Hallstrom (D, Camp Lajeune, N.C.) and Josie Brown (F, Elk River, Minn.) lead the Wildcats with two goals and four points each. Freshman goalkeeper Margaret Harma (GK, Richland, Michl.) has started 10 matches going 1-10-1 with a goals against average of 2.16.

The Wildcats are being outscored at a clip of 28-9 and outshot 177-156 in 2014. They are averaging .75 goals per game have four assists.

Inside the MSU vs. WSC Series: The match between the Mavericks and the Wildcats will be the tenth meeting between the two. MSU has yet to lose to WSC going 9-0-0 all-time against them.

Scouting the Vikings: Augustana comes into the weekend with an overall record of 10-2-0 and are 8-1-0 in the NSIC. Augustana returned to the polls this weekend coming in the polls at No. 22. Last weekend the Vikings picked up a couple of victories at home against St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth.

Head coach Brandon Barkus is in his ninth season as the head coach of the Vikings and has a record of 71-63-15. The Vikings have four players that are in double-digits in scoring with senior Payton Pry (F, Lawton, Iowa) leading the way with nine goals and one assist for 19 points. Senior goalkeeper Ashley Limmer (GK, Brandon, S.D.) has logged over 1,000 minutes and has a goals against average of .78 aand a save percentage of .845.

As a team the Vikings have scored 27 goals compared to nine for their opponents. They are also outshooting their opponents 204-149, averaging 17 shots per game.
 
Inside the MSU vs. Augustana Series: The Mavericks hold the all-time series lead against the Vikings amassing a 16-2-0 record in a series that dates back to 2000.

Program History: The 2014 season marks the 20th year of women's soccer as a varsity sport at Minnesota State. MSU claimed its second-straight NSIC regular-season championship last year after capturing NCC regular-season crowns in 1998, 2000, 2001, 2003, and 2007.  The Mavericks currently hold a 252-109-27 (.681) all-time record and 61-11-7 (.806) all-time mark in seven seasons in the NSIC. MSU has posted 16 consecutive winning seasons dating back to 1998.

MSU vs. Oppenents: The Mavericks have been dominating their opponents in 2014 in shots. MSU is outshooting its opponents 299-48 and have 128 shots on goal compared to 21 by opposing teams. MSU also has 99 corner kicks on the season while its competition has totaled just 20.

The Road Ahead: MSU will be back on the road after this weekend to take on Minnesota Duluth on Friday, October 24th and St. Cloud State on Sunday, October 26th.
