MARSHALL, Minn. – Minnesota State wrestling is set to tangle with Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday, at 3:30 p.m.
Minnesota State, which has lost its last six matches, owns a 2-6 overall record and is 2-2 in NSIC competition. SMSU comes in with a 9-4 record and a 3-1 record in conference action, but dropped its last dual to #7 Upper Iowa, 27-9.
A pair of Mavericks take winning streaks into the match vs. SMSU in
Alphonso Vruno (So., 141 lbs.) and
Adam Cooling (Fr., 157 lbs.). Vruno's streak is up to four wins with a major win over Jacob Anderson (Augustana) Saturday. Vruno, who stands 16-7 overall, is rated eighth in the latest NWCA Division II national rankings. Cooling has not cracked the top eight yet for the 157 lbs. weight class, but stands 20-7 overall and is riding a five-match winning streak and stands
MSU also has members ranked in the super region three rankings. Vruno is ranked fourth, while Cooling collected a seventh-place ranking.
Darick Vancura (Fr., 174 lbs.), who owns a 23-8 record, is rated fourth and
Brendan Eichmann (Sr., 197 lbs.) is rated sixth.
After their dual with the Mustangs, the Mavericks travel to #7 Upper Iowa on Feb 7. The dual with the Peacocks is slated for 7 p.m.
