9/15/2013 2:06:00 PM

Box Score Allendale, Mich. --- Fourth-ranked Minnesota State fell behind less than five minutes into the match and was unable to recover as it dropped a 2-0 decision to second-ranked Grand Valley State in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at the GVSU Soccer Field.

It was the first loss for the Mavericks in over a year ending a 24-match on unbeaten streak as MSU's last defeat came at Central Missouri, 2-1, on Sept. 2, 2012. The Mavericks drop to 3-1-0 overall and 1-0-0 in NSIC play, while GVSU moves to 2-0-1 on the year.

Minnesota State and junior Molly McGough surrendered their first goal of the season in the fifth minute when GVSU junior Charlie Socia notched her second goal of the year providing the Lakers with an early 1-0 lead. That score held until halftime as Grand Valley State held an 11-7 advantage in shots and 6-3 mark in shots on goal at the break.

Laker freshman Kendra Staufer made it a two-goal cushion in the 70th minute when she buried a goal into the left side of the net after the ball was misplayed by the Maverick back line, securing the 2-0 win.

McGough collected a match-high nine saves, one shy of her career-high, while senior Abbey Miller made all four saves for GVSU in the win. Senior Tori Meinhardt had a team-high two shots on goal and three total shots for the Mavericks, who were outshot 20-10 on the day and 11-4 in shots on goal.

Minnesota State begins its first full weekend of NSIC play next Saturday when it travels north to Bemidji State. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Chet Anderson Stadium.
