Box Score Mankato, Minn. – Minnesota State scored five times on the power play en route to a 7-3 win home Western Collegiate Hockey Association win over Alaska Anchorage Saturday in Mankato.
The Mavericks lead right from the start with junior forward
Jean-Paul Lafontaine getting things going when he came around from behind the net and scored off his own rebound for the game's first goal at 3:44 of the opening period. UAA answered at 6:42 when
Blake Tatchell took a pass from
Hudson Friesen and beat
Stephon Williams from in front of the net, but MSU sophomore forward
Bryce Gervais intercepted a Seawolves' pass and beat
Rob Gunderson with a shot high on the stick side at 13:57, allowing MSU to regain the lead. Junior defenseman
Zach Palmquist beat Gunderson on the stick side at 15:57 and with 4.3 seconds left in the first, senior forward,
Johnny McInnis, added MSU's fourth goal in the period and second power play goal of the game.
After UAA pulled within two 12 seconds into the second period, but freshman forward
Zach Stepan tallied on the power play at
the
3:23 mark to make it 5-2 and that's how it stood at the end of the middle frame.
UAA made it 5-3 at 5:36 of the third, but power play goals by McInnis and Lafontaine, at 6:09 and 8:18 of the third, put the game out of reach.
Lafontaine finished with with two goals and one assist, Palmquist had a goal and two assists, while McInnis scored twice, Stepan had a goal and and an assist and junior forward
Matt Leitner finished with three assists.
The Mavericks, who have won their last three games, outshot UAA by a 31-26 margin in the game. MSU converted on five of six power play chances and the last time the Mavericks had scored at least five power play goals in a game was March 6, 2004 in a 9-1 win over Nebraska-Omaha.
With the win, MSU ups its record to 7-7-0, 5-3-0 in WCHA. UAA falls to 6-6-2, 3-5-2 WCHA.
Minnesota State hosts Northern Michigan in a pair of WCHA games next Friday and Saturday in its next action.
