Box Score St. Paul, Minn. --- The #2 Minnesota State football team put on another running clinic Saturday afternoon as it tallied 222 yards on the ground, en route to a 27-7 win over the Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears.
With the win, MSU improves to 5-0 on the season and has extended its NSIC winning streak to 16 games dating back to week one of the 2012 season. MSU's fifth win of the season also represents the programs 400th all-time win. With the loss, CU falls to 3-2 on the season.
MSU's rushing attack accounted for 222 of MSU's 355 yards from scrimmage. Leading the rushing attack again was senior
Jon Wolf, who posted 107 yards, including a 44-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. His 107 rushing yards on the day represents his second 100-yard rushing game of the season and the sixth of his career. Junior
Andy Pfeiffer added 67 yards as well. Â
Wolf also completed 8-of-17 passes for 128 yards. Senior
Dennis Carter tallied a team-leading 50 receiving yards, while Pfeiffer followed close behind with 47 receiving yards. Carter also opened the scoring with an 84 yard punt return for a touchdown in the first quarter.
On defense, three different Mavericks posted an interception including juniors
Nathan Hancock,
Eric Clark and
Kris Fleigle. Sophomore
Tyler Henderson posted a team-high nine tackles. As a unit, the MSU defense allowed just 256 total yards of offense, and gave up just seven points as Concordia posted a late fourth quarter touchdown.
On special teams, Sam Brockshus went 4-of-4 in field goal attempts with kicks from 35, 32, 41 and 27 yards out. Â
Carter got the scoring going in the first quarter as he returned a Golden Bear punt 84 yards to give MSU a 6-0 lead with 9:08 left in the first quarter. A blocked extra point resulted in a two-point conversion as junior
Max Hofmeister recovered it and brought it into the endzone to give MSU an 8-0 lead. A 35-yard field goal by Brockshus extended MSU's lead to 11-0 entering the second quarter.
With eight minutes left in the second, Brockshus gave MSU a 14-0 lead with a 35 yard field goal, before Wolf extended MSU's lead to 21-0 after a 44-yard touchdown run with 1:03 left in the first half. Â
A pair of second half field goals from Brockshus gave MSU a 27-0 lead, before James Peterson connected with Corey Cole in the endzone to give the Golden Bears their only score of the game.
The Mavericks return home Saturday, Oct. 12, as they take on the Augustana Vikings. The opening kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
