#18 Minnesota State Skates Past UConn in Home-Opener

Box Score Mankato, Minn. --- 18th-rated Minnesota State built a 2-0 lead over the course of the first two periods and then held on in taking a 2-1 win nonconference win over the University of Connecticut in men's hockey action in Mankato Friday.

The Mavericks started the scoring when sophomore forward Teddy Blueger collected his own rebound and put the puck past UConn netminder with Minnesota State on the power play at 14:43 of the opening period.
It became a 2-0 Minnesota State lead at 6:02 in the second period after senior defensemen Josh Nelson took a shot from the point and sophomore forward Dylan Margonari got his stick on it to deflecting it in for his first goal of the season.

UConn responded at 3:21 mark of the third when forward Brett Skibba rifled a shot from the point that was tipped past Maverick sophomore goaltender Stephon Williams by senior forward Jordan Sims.

Minnesota State, which got a pair of assists in the game from senior forward Johnny McInnis, owned a 31-17 advantage in shots on goal and went one-for-three on the power play against the Huskies (0-1-0).

UConn went 0-2 on the night and is 0-1-0 for the season. The game, which was the regular-season home-opener for the Mavericks, was played in front of 3,829 fans at Verizon Wireless Center

The Mavericks, who are 1-2-0 for the year, and the Huskies are scheduled to meet again Saturday with a 7:07 p.m. puck drop.

Minnesota State head coach Mike Hastings commented following Friday's win.
