#14 Minnesota State Cruises to 4-0 Win over Providence Saturday

Box Score         Mankato, Minn. --- 14th-ranked Minnesota State got goals from four different players and freshman netminder Stephon Williams stopped all 24 shots as the host Mavericks cruised to a 4-0 win over visiting Providence Saturday.

Now 11-1-0 in their last 12 games, the Mavericks finshed off nonconference action on the season with a record of 6-0-2

MSU got on the board in the first period on a goal scored by freshman forward Bryce Gervais, who collected a rebound in front of the net off a shot by sophomore forward Max Gaede and slapped the puck past Providence goalie Russ Stein at 15:58. The goal, his fifth of the year, proved to be his second game-winner in 2012-13.

MSU furthered its lead in the second period, this time on a power play goal scored by sophomore forward Matt Leitner, who took a pass from sophomore defenseman Zach Palmquist and launched a shot from the point that beat Stein between the pads at 05:47.

The third MSU goal came via senior defenseman Evan Mosey who carried the puck into the offensive zone and wrapped a shot around Stein and into the net at 11:12 of the third period. MSU tacked on a power play goal to off a shot by Eriah Hayes, his team-high 12th goal of the year at 17:08 to close out the scoring in the game.  It is the seventh power play marker on the season for the LaCrescent, Minn., native, which ranks first in the nation.

Willams was perfect in the game with 24 saves in notching his third shut-out of the year.

Minnesota State, now 14-6-2-overall on the year, outshot Providence 37-24 on the night.  The Mavericks were two-for-seven on the power play, while Providence was zero-for-two on power play chances. The game was played in front of 2,475 fans at the Verizon Wireless Center.

The Mavericks  return to Western College Hockey Association action next Friday and Saturday with Wisconsin visiting Verizon Wireless Center.
