Dorr's Goal Lifts Mavericks Past Seawolves

2/12/2012 12:43:00 AM

Anchorage, Alaska  ---  A third-period goal by senior forward Michael Dorr lifted Minnesota State past Alaska Anchorage in a men’s Western Collegiate Hockey Association contest, 2-1, Saturday.

Coupled with Friday’s 3-2 win, the Mavericks picked up their first league road sweep since the 2008-09 season (3-2 and 4-2 wins at Michigan Tech).

Junior forward Eriah Hayes put a rebound past goaltender Rob Gunderson at 2:37 of the first period as Minnesota State jumped out to a 1-0 lead. The goal is a team-high 13th of the year for Hayes. UAA forward Matt Bailey wristed the puck past MSU netminder Phil Cook at 3:42 and the two teams stood knotted 1-1 at the end of the opening stanza.

Neither team was able to score in the middle frame and, in the third period and  after taking a pass from freshman defenseman Zach Palmquist, Dorr went in all alone and flipped the puck past Gunderson with the game-winning goal at 13:51.  The goal is Dorr’s seventh of the year, his first game-winning goal this year and the fifth game-winning goal of the year.

Alaska-Anchorage held a 19-16 advantage in shots on goal in the game with the 16 shots on goal representing a season-low for the Mavericks.

Now 12-19-1 overall and 8-15-1 WCHA on the year, the Mavericks won 7-4-0 in their last 11 games. MSU hosts the defending national champions from Minnesota Duluth next Friday and Saturday in its next action.
