   Storrs, Conn. --- 18th-rated Minnesota State got a pair of goals from junior forward Johnny McInnis in downing Connecticut 3-1 in a nonconference men’s hockey game played in Storrs, Conn., Sunday.

Win the win the Mavericks claim the tournament title at 20th Annual UConn Classic hosted by the University of Connecticut this weekend.
UConn forward Tyler Bouchard fired a shot from the win that beat Stephon Williams on the stickside at 10:47 of the first for the game’s first goal. 

The Mavericks took control of the game by scoring twice in the middle frame after junior forward Johnny McInnis converted on a loose puck in front of the net at 2:08 and MSU took the lead at 5:31 after McInnis got his second goal of the game and his tenth of the year when he deflected sophomore defenseman Brett Stern’s shot from the point past UConn’s Matt Grogan.

Sophomore defenseman Zach Palmquist scored an empty-net goal at 19:54 to seal the victory for the Mavericks.

McInnis was named tournament Most Valuable Player, while sophomore forward Jean-Paul Lafontaine, senior defenseman Tyler Elbrecht and freshman goaltender Stephon Williams earned all-tournament honors.

Now 12-6-2 overall on the season, Minnesota State outshot UConn by a 31-18 margin in the game. The Mavericks finished zero-for-three on the power play, while Connecticut was zero-for-one  with the man advantage.  

With the win Minnesota State has now won nine of its last ten games.

Next action for Minnesota State is next weekend with Providence visiting Verizon Wireless Center for a pair of nonconference games Friday and Saturday.
