Brianne West scored the match's only goal to propel Minnesota State to a 1-0 NCAA Division II Central Region Tournament victory over the University of Central Oklahoma.
The win sends the seventh-ranked Mavericks to the Central Region championship next Friday against Central Missouri.
MSU has advanced to the third round of the NCAA tournament only once before and has never claimed a central region title in three previous appearances. The win also extends the Mavericks' home unbeaten streak to 25 games and current unbeaten streak to 19, both school records.
The Mavericks started the match quickly, outshooting the Bronchos 9-1 in the first half. They earned five corner kicks and numerous scoring chances but were unable to capitalize.
The contest remained scoreless until the 81st minute when West blasted a shot into the right side past diving UCO netminder
Meagan Burke for her seventh goal of the year off assists from junior
Tori Meinhardt and fellow senior
Brittany Henry.
Burke finished with eight saves for the Bronchos, while sophomore goalkeeper
Molly McGough stopped all four shots on goal she faced for the Mavericks. MSU outshot UCO 18-6 in the match
Second-seeded Minnesota State (17-1-3) will face top-seed Central Missouri in the central region championship match Friday on the campus of Grand Valley State University with game time yet to be determined.
