On Tap: Minnesota State (0-0-0 overall, 0-0-0 WCHA) hosts RPI (1-0-1, 0-0-0 ECAC) in nonconference action this weekend in the first home games of 2012-13 for the Mavericks. MSU and RPI play in downtown Mankato at Verizon Wireless Center (4,832) Friday (7:37 p.m.) and Saturday (7:07 p.m.).
About the MSU-RPI Series: The Mavericks are 1-1-0 in the all-time series vs. the Engineers having played them for the first time last year in Troy, N.Y. MSU won 1-0 before absorbing a 4-1 loss the next night in the two games.
MSU Most Recently: The Mavericks got a pair of four-point performances from both Chase Grant (3-1--4) and Matt Leitner (1-3--4) in the 4-1 win at Alabama-Huntsville last Friday. Senior netminder Phil Cook got the win with 24 saves as the visiting Mavericks outshot the Chargers by a 41-25 margin. The game was the first of the year for both teams and was played in front of 5,106 fans at UAH’s Von Braun Center.
The Mavericks had to rally for the 2-2 the next night with senior forward Eriah Hayes sending the game in to a scoreless overtime with his goal coming at 17:46 of the third period. Junior forward Johnny McInnis also scored for MSU and freshman goaltender Stephon Williams, who made his collegiate debut in the game, finished with 22 saves.
RPI Most Recently: The Engineers hosted Ferris State over the weekend and came away a 3-1 win and 2-2 tie. Sophomore forward Jacob Laliberte led RPI in the two games, tallying three goals, including two on the power play. Sophomore forwards Matt Neal contributed three assists and Ryan Haggerty had a goal and an assist. Sophomore forward Brock Higgs, who led the Engineers in scoring last year with 3-20--23, was held scoreless in the two contests played in Troy, N.Y.
